Degree Distribution Requirements
This curriculum guide is a recommended plan of study. Students with questions about degree requirements should contact an academic advisor.
Placement in the Dance Program is by audition only. Based on the audition the student is placed at the level of technique the faculty feels will ensure progress. To be admitted to the BFA degree program in the School, students must work for one year of study as a probationary dance major, demonstrate acceptable work habits, pass the Freshman Jury and Interview to gain admittance to the college and status as a BA in Dance major in preparation for auditioning for the BFA program at the end of the sophomore year.
Students must maintain a 2.875 GPA in all dance classes for a total of two years. To graduate from the BFA in Dance, students must complete one full year of Ballet VIII with a minimum of a B and be enrolled in a ballet technique class each semester until they satisfy their technique requirements and maintain an overall 2.875 GPA in all dance classes.
7920:321 Rhythmic Analysis may be substituted for 7920:320 Movement Fundamentals. 3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300 may be substituted for 3400:210 Humanities in the Western Tradition. Tap may replace Jazz in the 4th year Fall semester.
Choreography III/IV are offered alternating years. It is recommended to take Choreography I and II the year immediately preceding Choreography III. Also, dance majors may not use Dance courses to fulfill the Physical Education/Wellness requirement. The Dance Program requires 7760:133 Nutrition Fundamental (3 credits) to complete the Physical Education/Wellness requirement and to serve as a prerequisite for 7920:116 Physical Analysis I for Dance.
Students who wish to pursue the BFA will likely need a 5th or 6th year to complete two semesters of Ballet VIII if they begin their freshman year at a level lower than the Ballet V level.
Participation in Dance Organization is by audition and optional for each semester of study. A student receives fee remission for 7910:1__ Dance Organizations (performance courses). There are many different areas in which a student may receive credit for Dance Organization. A student must earn a minimum of 5 credits towards completion of the BFA degree. No more than 12 hours of Dance Organization will count toward the minimum of 128 hours required for graduation. Opportunities to enroll are offered each semester by audition only.
Six credits of Social Science courses are required. Introduction to Psychology, 3750:100, is required and is a prerequisite for 7920:361, Learning Theory for Dance.
To complete the Humanities and Western Tradition general education requirement, students must complete 3400:210 Humanities in the Western Tradition I or 3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300 and an additional 6 credits. 3600:101 Intro to Philosophy is required and is a prerequisite for 7920:445 Dance Philosophy & Criticism. Dance majors may not use 7900:200 Viewing Dance as an option in the Fine Arts set.
Eight credits of Natural Science are required. 3100:200/201 Human Anatomy & Physiology I/Lab is required and is a prerequisite for 7920:116 Physical Analysis I.
Dance majors may not use Dance courses to fulfill the Physical Education/Wellness requirement. The Dance Program requires 7400:133 Nutrition Fundamentals (3 credits) to complete the Physical Education/Wellness requirement and to serve as a prerequisite for 7920:116 Physical Analysis I for Dance.
The following credit hour requirements apply to this degree: 133 minimum total credits; 32 credits in residence; the final 32 credits must be taken from The University of Akron.
