Degree Distribution Requirements
This curriculum guide is a recommended plan of study. Students with questions about degree requirements should contact an academic advisor.
See your adviser as some courses are not offered every year.
7500:455 Advanced Conducting: Instrumental may be substituted for 7500:456 Advanced Conducting: Choral.
Class Piano I, Class Piano II and Intro to Theory are not counted toward the degree program total. These classes are required or excused per entrance placement.
7520 Applied Music classes must be your Primary Instrument.
Jury to the 300 level in Applied Piano is required prior to graduation.
3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300 may be substituted for 3400:210 Humanities in the Western Tradition.
A student meeting the following criteria is eligible for direct admission to his/her music degree program in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences: high-school core classes completed; 3.0 high-school GPA; minimum combined ACT score of 20, or combined SAT score of 800; placement in Theory I and audition at 100 level of applied instrument; award of music scholarship.
It is recommended that students consider taking General Education courses during some summer sessions to reduce credit load during the regular academic year.
Submit a portfolio of your original composition to faculty for acceptance to the Composition program before proceeding to upper level study.
Three hours of Music History credits apply to the General Education requirements. Jury to the 300 level of Applied Music: Primary Instrument is required for graduation. Jury to the 400 level of Applied Composition is required for graduation.
Students are required to take 2 credits of 7500:497 Indp. Study: Music during Year 4 Fall.
Jury to the 300 level in the primary applied instrument is required prior to graduation.
The following credit hour requirements apply to this degree: 130 minimum total credits; 32 credits in residence; the final 32 credits must be taken from The University of Akron.
