Degree Distribution Requirements
This curriculum guide is a recommended plan of study. Students with questions about degree requirements should contact an academic advisor.
3520:101, 102 Beginning French I and II or 3530:101, 102 Beginning German I and II may be substituted for 3550:101, 102 Beginning Italian I and II.
3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300 may be substituted for 3400:210 Humanities in the Western Tradition.
7500:353 Electronic Music may be substituted for 7500:471 Counterpoint.
7500:455 Advanced Conducting: Instrumental may be substituted for 7500:456 Advanced Conducting: Choral.
Class Piano I, Class Piano II and Intro to Theory are not counted toward the degree program total. These classes are required or excused per entrance placement.
Students must take four credits of 7500:497 Independent Study: Music during Fall of Year 4 and three credits during Spring of Year 4.
It is recommended that students consider taking General Education courses during some summer sessions to reduce credit load during the regular academic year.
Three hours of Music History credits may apply to General Education requirements. Jury to the 300 level Primary Instrument course is required for graduation.
A student meeting the following criteria is eligible for direct admission to his/her music degree program in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences: high-school core classes completed; 3.0 high-school GPA; minimum combined ACT score of 20, or combined SAT score of 800; placement in Theory I and audition at 100 level of applied instrument; award of music scholarship.
Reading proficiency equal to the second year of French, German or Italian is required.

The following credit hour requirements apply to this degree: 130 minimum total credits; 32 credits in residence; the final 32 credits must be taken from The University of Akron.
