Degree Distribution Requirements
This curriculum guide is a recommended plan of study. Students with questions about degree requirements should contact an academic advisor.
Before taking any of the upper level music courses the student must be accepted into the Music Education Program. For acceptance into the Music Education Program the student must successfully complete all of the above course work for the first and second years with a grade of C or better in all music and music education coursework, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher, pass the music education jury and jury to the 200 level on her/his applied instrument.
Students also have to have a composite music education recommendation score of 11 or higher from the student's applied music teacher, major conducted ensemble director, instrumental music education professor, music theory professor and the undergraduate music coordinator.
3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300 may be substituted for 3400:210 Humanities in the Western Tradition.
Students must be admitted to the College of Education and have successfully completed all of the third year coursework with a grade fo C or better in all music and music education courses prior to enrolling in any of the following music courses: 7500:361,442,443,455,458.
Three hours of Music History credits may apply to General Education requirement.
Class Piano I, Class Piano II and Intro to Theory are not counted toward the degree program total. These classes are required or excused per entrance placement.
Students are required to take 10 credits of 5300:495 Student Teaching: Secondary Education during Fall of Year 5.
It is recommended that students consider taking General Education courses during some summer sessions to reduce credit load during the regular academic year.
The following credit hour requirements apply to this degree: 143 minimum total credits; 32 credits in residence; the final 32 credits must be taken from The University of Akron.
