Degree Distribution Requirements
This curriculum guide is a recommended plan of study. Students with questions about degree requirements should contact an academic advisor.
3400:251 U.S. History Since 1877 or 3400:250 U.S. History to 1877 may be substituted for 3700:100 Government & Politics in the U.S.
3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300 may be substituted for 3400:210 Humanities in the Western Tradition.
A 2.5 overall GPA and 2.5 GPA in pre-req courses are required to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program.
Eight credits of Natural Science are required to transfer to the College of Education. Early Childhood Education majors must take 3100:103 Natural Science Biology (3100:103, 4 credits) or an equivalent biology course at a level higher than 103. Please see the General Education Guide for the remaining four credits of this requirement.
Social Science requirement: Early Childhood Education majors are required to take 3350:100 Intro to Geography to fulfill half of this requirement. Students must complete one of the following courses to fulfill the second half of the Social Science requirement: 3400:250 U.S. History to 1877 or 3400:251 U.S. History since 1877 or 3700:100 Government & Politics in the U.S.
All Early Education majors are required to take 3450:140 Fundamentals of Mathematics for Primary Educators and 3450:240 Mathematical Foundations for Early Childhood Educators to graduate.
Computer literacy requirement: A passing score on the computer literacy exam or completion of one of the computer classes listed in the following note at a B or better is required for final acceptance into the College of Education Teacher Education Program. The exam tests the following: creating, saving, naming skills; basic word processing skills; basic e-mail and internet skills.
Copies of "What's on the Computer Literary Assessment" are available in the College of Education, Office of Student Services, Zook Hall 207. If you do not pass the computer literacy test after two attempts, you must complete one of the following courses and earn a grade of B or better prior to admission to the Teacher Education Program: 2440:105(3) Introduction to Computers Software Fundamentals; 7500:298(2) Technologies of Music Education.
A grade of C or better is required in all pre-admission coursework regardless of when a student began college.
Some education courses may require additional field or service learning hours.
The following credit hour requirements apply to this degree: 128 minimum total credits; 32 credits in residence; the final 32 credits must be taken from The University of Akron.
