Asian Studies Certificate
The graduate certificate in Asian Studies Students offers students a multi-disciplinary course of study that will provide them with in-depth training in a special area that may be particularly useful as they pursue careers in such fields as Academia, Law, Public History, Education, Business, and even Medicine, where they will practice their profession abroad or use their international experience to expand their understandings of these regions as they work with topics on or populations from diverse societies in Asia. The certificate complements any graduate major in the university and is also appropriate for students with a graduate degree wishing to return to the university for mid-career training.
- Two years of an Asian language (or equivalent)
- Students without two years of an Asian language may satisfy this requirement by taking undergraduate Asian language courses at The University of Akron (or another accredited institution)
Applications to the Asian Studies Certificate program are accepted on a rolling basis.
All assistantships (and any fellowships) are awarded through the academic department. Students interested in obtaining an assistantship must apply. New students may indicate on their online application for admission that they would like to be considered for an assistantship. Current students must contact the academic department for application information. Each department may have different requirements for assistantship applicants, so all students should contact the academic department to determine these particular requirements. Only those students fully admitted to a master’s or doctoral degree-seeking program are eligible for a graduate assistantship. Students admitted as non-degree seeking or to a certificate program may not hold an assistantship.
