About the Degree
The master’s program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering offers students opportunities to work with faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized for their research. The graduate program is multidisciplinary, often collaborating with faculty throughout the university and combining research topics across traditional boundaries.
The master’s program in mechanical engineering requires students to take 30 credits for thesis option or 32 credits for non-thesis option. Students receiving Research/Teaching Assistantships are expected to take the thesis option.
The Mechanical Engineering Department offers graduate-level instruction and research opportunities in Dynamics, Vibrations and Controls, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and Energy Systems, Materials and Manufacture, Solid Mechanics, and Systems Engineering. However, students are encouraged to devise a plan of study that fits their interests, regardless of how it cuts across these topics.
Salary and Career Outlook
Mechanical engineers research, develop, design, manufacture, and test tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical devices. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of mechanical engineers to increase 5% between 2012 and 2022.
Most of our recent MS graduates are employed as mechanical engineers and their salaries are in the range of $60k - $100k.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is the largest department in the College of Engineering. The department’s faculty consists of 29 nationally and internationally known experts in the field of mechanical engineering, who not only conduct world-class research but also take teaching and advising seriously to provide each of our students the greatest opportunity to succeed.
Most of our graduate classes are offered in the evenings, making it possible for students with full-time employment to attend our graduate program. Another distinction of our MS program is the non-thesis option, which is very popular among our part-time students.
