Sociology

At the graduate level, we offer an M.A. degree as well as the Ph.D. degree. The department focuses on Medical Sociology/Mental Health, Social Inequalities, Social Psychology, and Criminology/Deviance. For nearly four decades we have offered the Ph.D. in conjunction with the faculty at nearby Kent State University. While the degree is earned at the university of admittance, once admitted to the program, students, faculty, and courses are treated as a single graduate department. Coursework is offered at both campuses and faculty and students interchange freely.

Admission Requirements

MASTER'S DEGREE:

• Hold a baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
• 3.0 grade point average in sociology or related major
• GRE (General Test)
• Three letters of recommendation
• Writing sample
• Statement of purpose outlining educational and career objectives

DOCTORAL DEGREE:

• Hold a master's degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5
• GRE (General Test)
• Three letters of recommendation
• Writing sample
• Statement of purpose outlining educational and career objectives

Application Deadline

• January 15 for Fall enrollment (if wanting to be considered for a graduate assistantship)
• March 1 for Fall enrollment (if not seeking a graduate assistantship)

The Department of Sociology only admits for the Fall semester.

Our graduate program provides leaders in college and university education, research, and policy planning and assessment in major community agencies, businesses, government, and health care organizations in Ohio, nationally and internationally.

Assistantship/Scholarship Information

All assistantships (and any fellowships) are awarded through the academic department. Students interested in obtaining an assistantship must apply. New students may indicate on their online application for admission that they would like to be considered for an assistantship. Current students must contact the academic department for application information. Each department may have different requirements for assistantship applicants, so all students should contact the academic department to determine these particular requirements. Only those students fully admitted to a master’s or doctoral degree-seeking program are eligible for a graduate assistantship. Students admitted as non-degree seeking or to a certificate program may not hold an assistantship.

Financial Aid Information

Paying for college is a vital part of the education process. It is important to be informed of the many sources of aid available. Student loans are available to degree-seeking graduate students.
