Undergraduate Programs

Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics Track with Co-op Option)

Biomedical Engineering Fundamentals

Biomedical engineers conduct research and study the engineering aspects of biological systems to create new devices and procedures to improve health and quality of life.

  • Core curriculum provides solid background in engineering principles
  • Biomechanics Track focuses on mechanical engineering fundamentals, with specialization in:
    • cardiovascular mechanics
    • orthopedics
    • rehabilitation engineering
    • system simulators

Professional Preparation

Degree work prepares you to pursue the joint M.D./Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering between the College of
Engineering and the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.

Our Faculty

  • are actively involved in UA's Institute for Biomedical Engineering Research
  • conduct research at area hospitals and related health care facilities

Akron Advantage

Hands-on Research

Experience biomedical engineering firsthand through our research facilities:

  • Nine major labs to use for classroom projects and individual research
  • Undergraduate students work with faculty members on a wide range of research activities in biomechanics, instrumentation, signals and imaging

Real World Experience

Gain important practical professional experience through the optional cooperative education program in the engineering field of your choice. Through co-op, you’ll alternate semesters of work and school following your
sophomore year. As an added benefit, you’ll earn a competitive salary.

Engineering Student Organizations

Interact with other engineering students and professionals in the field through organizations such as:

  • Tau Beta Pi (engineering honorary)
  • Women in Engineering
  • National Society of Black Engineers
  • Biomedical Engineers Society
  • American Society of Mechanical Engineers
  • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
