Financial Aid and Scholarships for Adult Students Financial concerns are a major reason many adults hesitate to return to school. At The University of Akron, we feel deeply that no one should ever have to give up the dream of higher education because of money. That's why we offer gift aid programs, loans, scholarships and payment plans for students.
The Office of Student Financial Aid offers guidance and a wealth of resources. Visit them online or call 330-972-7032.
Adults are considered independent students under federal law. It is important to indicate your independent status on all forms you complete. Some grants, loans and scholarships are only available to dependent students (those whose parents or guardians support them), but most are open to students of all ages and situations.
Let's look at the options: - Grants
Grants are a form of aid based only on financial need and do not have to be repaid. The three primary grants are the Ohio Instructional Grant, Federal Pell Grant and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant.
- Loans
Unlike other types of financial aid, loans must be repaid. Some are awarded based on need and others are not.
- Scholarships
Of particular interest to adult learners is the Verna Trushel Displaced Homemakers Scholarship for those who, for various reasons, cannot or do not want to remain full-time homemakers.
- Other Aid
Other forms of financial assistance may be available, depending on a student's particular circumstances.
- Installment Payment Plan (IPP)
For a fee and down payment, students may pay their tuition over the course of a semester in payments. To enroll, a student should fill out the IPP application that is given with the fee invoice after registration.
How to Apply for Financial Aid The University of Akron requires applicants to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You may get a FAFSA packet from UA's Office of Student Financial Aid. There's also an online FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov so you can apply via the Internet. Make sure UA gets a financial analysis report by writing UA's code number where indicated on the FAFSA. The code number for UA is 003123. Some general hints: apply early, use accurate information, copy tax returns in case you are asked for them and immediately report any changes in your financial circumstances to the financial aid office staff members so they may make note of them. How to Apply for Scholarships We encourage you to visit Cleveland Scholarship Program for additional assistance in regard to scholarships for adult learners. |
