Frequently Asked Questions from Adults

What are the admissions requirements for adults?

Adult students applying to The University of Akron need to submit high school transcripts or GED results along with the application for admission.

Is The University of Akron on semesters or quarters?

There are two 15-week semesters (August to December; January to May) each academic year.

An optional 15-week summer session (May to August) also is available.

Workshops, continuing education and accelerated programs have their own schedules that vary.

How much does it cost to attend The University of Akron?

Tuition is based on a full-time undergraduate course load of 12-15 credits per semester. For specific information, please visit Tuition and Fees.

Financial aid and scholarships are available. For more information related to financial assistance, visit financial aid or contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at 330-972-7032 or FinAid@uakron.edu.

Those age 60 and over enrolled in the Sixty Plus (60+) Program pay no tuition, only fees.

Workshops and other nontraditional programs have their own fee schedules.

Tuition and fees are subject to change.

How can I pay for my education?

The Installment Payment Plan allows students to pay their bills in installments over a semester. You'll receive an IPP application with your invoice after registration. For those who need financial aid, we have scholarships, as well as grants and loans available to students. Check out the options online at www.uakron.edu/finaid, or contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at 330-972-7032 or FinAid@uakron.edu.

I have some college credits from long ago. Are they useless?

Luckily, most college credits remain viable for years. Just make sure you apply as a transfer student. A transfer specialist in your college will evaluate your credits and apply them appropriately.

You also may get credit for life experience and work. Ask your academic adviser for more information.

Do you accept the GED?

Yes.

Is there a special orientation for adult students?

We understand that the concerns of an adult aren't going to be the same as those of an 18-year-old freshman. Our Office of New Student Orientation has a schedule of programs exclusively for adult students. Call 330-972-5347 or click here.
