Types of Admission

The University of Akron offers academic opportunities for most every student. Each applicant’s credentials are reviewed carefully to determine which admission category will best help that student achieve his or her academic goals.

Direct Admission: Students who demonstrate outstanding college preparation through completion of the core curriculum may be admitted directly to a specific academic program. We also consider such criteria as high school GPA, test scores and class rank. After an initial meeting with a professional academic adviser, the student will be advised by a faculty member in his or her college. Criteria for direct admission are selective and vary by academic department/major.

Standard Admission: Students who do not seek or are not qualified for direct admission are admitted to The University of Akron and begin their freshmen studies in University College. While in University College, students enroll in courses to meet the University’s general education requirements and in courses that are prerequisite to their intended majors.

General Admission: Students will be considered for general admission if they have less than a 2.30 GPA or lower than a 16 ACT/650 SAT score, or if they are deficient in completing the core curriculum for college preparation.

Next Steps for Admitted Students

The first step in becoming a student at The University of Akron is to submit the Intent to Enroll Form and $75 confirmation fee. Both can be completed online at Intent to Enroll.

When we receive the Intent to Enroll Form and confirmation fee, we'll send the student an Enrollment Packet. This packet will include New Student Orientation dates and details to get them registered for classes and ready for college life. It also will include a housing contract.

Please encourage your students to complete this process at their earliest convenience. Early action is needed to confirm their seat for the upcoming term.
