College students have been known to push themselves to the limit - in academics, sports and work. The University of Akron provides students with comprehensive care for their physical well being. The health staff, including a physician, nurse practitioner and a team of nurses, treats both acute illnesses and injuries and offers primary care services. Most acute problems are handled on a walk-in basis. Students may make appointments for physical examinations, routine care and women's health issues.
If Health Services is closed, students are directed to Akron City Hospital, a fully accredited and highly respected medical center near campus. All student health concerns are confidential. No records will be released to anyone without the student's written permission.
For students undergoing emotional difficulties, UA's Counseling, Testing and Career Center offers free, confidential help. A staff of six psychologists and three psychology interns provide personal therapy, educational counseling, group counseling and crisis intervention. Each semester, the center offers a College Survival Kit that covers a host of college-related issues such as stress and study skills.
Some students have difficulty deciding on their major and career direction. The center offers assessment and counseling to help them define their values, interests and talents. It also offers placement testing to give students an evaluation of their abilities in writing, reading, comprehension, math and foreign languages.
