Postsecondary Students If you are thinking of applying to UA as a postsecondary student, we'll be the first to tell you - we're impressed. It takes a remarkable amount of ambition and determination to take on college while you're still in high school. The rewards are many and include vast intellectual and emotional growth. Students have found it a great way to prepare for college and get a solid head start on their college coursework. Applying You can request an undergraduate admissions application by calling or writing the Office of Admissions, The University of Akron; Akron, OH 44325-2001. The phone numbers are 330-972-7077 or 1-800-655-4884. You also may file online. Make certain to fill out all sides of the application and obtain all required signatures. You must pay a $30 application fee, submit a high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores. Check the box for "Postsecondary Enrollment Options Program." Deadlines Students applying for the fall semester must apply by May 15. Those applying to attend the spring semester must apply by Oct. 15. Your Options The postsecondary program has two options. Option A allows the student to receive college credit only, and the student is responsible for tuition, fees and all other costs related to the program. Option B allows the student to receive both high school and college credit, and educational expenses are covered by the state of Ohio. The credit limit is one class per semester for ninth and 10th graders, while 11th and 12th graders may enroll in up to 14 credit hours per semester. Students may appeal to the dean of University College to enroll in more than 14 credit hours.
Admissions Requirements The Postsecondary Enrollment Options Program is for high school students with a strong academic background. Students must submit ACT/SAT test results for placement purposes.
Those in the 11th and 12th grades must have a 3.30 cumulative GPA with a minimum composite score of 24 ACT or 1100 SAT (math and critical reading combined score) or a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 with ACT/SAT scores.
Ninth and 10th graders must have a minimum composite score of 26 ACT or 1150 SAT (math and critical reading combined score); minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75; a letter of recommendation from a school instructor or guidance counselor; and a grade of B+ or higher in English courses. Applicants also must submit an essay about why they want to enroll in the program. Orientation All postsecondary students are required to pay for and attend an orientation program to enroll in the postsecondary program at UA. The dates will be sent before the start of the semester. During the orientation, students will take UA's placement tests ( if needed ) and meet with an adviser to register for classes.
Program Restrictions Postsecondary students are not eligible for financial aid, nor can they participate in varsity athletics or Greek life. They also are prohibited from living on campus or taking part in most organized extracurricular activities. Grades Participants in the postsecondary program should remember they are establishing a college transcript that will likely stay with them for life. In the future, you'll be required to provide copies of these transcripts.
