The University of Akron does not require an essay for admission. However, students who apply to the Honors College must submit an essay along with their Honors College application. Learn more about the Honors College.

Admission is determined by:

1. High school record (and a passing score on the Ohio Graduation Test for in-state students), and
2. Scores on the ACT or SAT (ACT Writing Test is recommended).

College Prep Curriculum - suggested minimums:

• English - four units
• Mathematics - three units
• Natural Science - three units
• Social Science - three units
• Foreign Language - two units

Admission Requirements:

Postsecondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP)

Eleventh and 12th Grade Students

• 3.30 cumulative grade point average
• 24 ACT composite or 1110 SAT total (math and critical reading combined score)

Or

• 3.5 cumulative grade point average

Note: All applicants must submit test scores for placement purposes, regardless of GPA.

Ninth and 10th Grade Students

• 3.75 cumulative grade point average
• 26 ACT or 1150 SAT total (math and critical reading combined score
• Grade of B+ in all English courses
• Letter of recommendation from your high school counselor supporting your preparedness for college level coursework
• Submit an essay, 500 words or less, regarding why you want to enroll in the PSEOP program

Requirements for Admission to Academic Colleges

Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences

• 2.00 GPA with 30 semester hours of credit
• English, political science and sociology each require a 2.20 GPA in both the cumulative GPA and in the major coursework
• Completion of English composition I and II
• 3 credits of mathematics or statistics
• Approval from the dean

College of Business Administration

• 2.50 GPA with 30 semester hours of credit
• 2.00 GPA in economics and business courses
• Business and economics each require a 2.00 cumulative GPA and a 2.00 GPA in major coursework
• Completion of Accounting I or equivalent, college algebra or higher, microeconomics or macroeconomics and introduction to psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology or equivalent

College of Education

• 2.50 in prerequisite coursework
• 2.50 cumulative GPA with 30 semester hours of credit
• There may be additional requirements according to the program

College of Engineering

• 2.30 GPA in three of the following four areas: cumulative GPA, engineering, math and science with 30 semester hours of credit
• Required coursework includes a grade of C- or better in calculus I and II

College of Creative and Professional Arts

• 2.3 GPA with 30 semester hours of credit
• The School of Communication requires 2.5 GPA and 30 hours
• Mary Schiller Myers School of Art requires a portfolio review
• The Schools of Dance and Music require auditions
• Approval from the dean

College of Health Sciences and Human Services

• 2.3 GPA with 30 semester hours of credit
• The Dietetics program requires a 2.8 cumulative GPA and successful completion of the prerequisite courses
• Transfer credits for courses in the social work major will be considered only if they are from a CSWE-accredited program
• Approval from the dean

College of Nursing

• 3.0 GPA with 24 semester hours of credit
• Transcripts from all schools of nursing are required
• Required coursework includes a grade of C or better in all prerequisites
• Approximately 160 students are admitted each year to nursing through a competitive science GPA rank order selection

Summit College

• 2.00 cumulative GPA
• Emergency Management requires an associate degree in public safety-related fields
• Respiratory care, radiologic technology and surgical assisting require separate admission into each of the programs
• The Allied Health deadline is April 15 of each year (March 1 is the deadline for radiologic technology for the fall semester)

University College

• 2.00 cumulative GPA
• Students that have below a 2.00 cumulative GPA will be reviewed on a case by case basis
