The Career Planning Course 1100:117, 2 credits – This Credit / Non-credit course in career decision making is designed to provide an in-depth, systematic approach to career planning. You will explore such topics as how to identify and overcome career blockages and how to examine your interests, skills, values and personality. In addition, you will research career information such as the nature of work, qualifications, employment outlook, earnings and working conditions.

One of the specific requirements of the Career Planning class is the Strong Interest Inventory (SII) that each student is required to purchase and complete. The SII has been in use since the 1920s. Its purpose is to provide insights that help people find careers that fit. It does so by comparing your interests to the interests of people who enjoy their jobs. The report is based on the concept that if they like their jobs and you share the same interests, you are likely to find similar work enjoyable. The SII is only one tool in the career planning arsenal that you will build by taking the course. Students receive a printed report from the testing company that is usually interpreted for them in class by personnel from the Counseling and Testing Center.

You will also learn how to put together a winning resume and cover letter, learn about the job interview process, and be exposed to other career professionals from other departments on campus who will speak to you about internships, co-op opportunities, career management, and career resources.

Taught by academic advisers, who regularly work with exploratory students and their advisees seeking to change their majors, and by other career-oriented professionals, Career Planning is an excellent way to find the answer to the “What Am I Going to be When I Grow Up?” question and an excellent way to settle on a major that will lead you to a satisfying career field.
