Advisement Center

Where is the Academic Advisement Center
The Academic Advisement Center is located in 205 Simmons Hall, next to the North Campus Parking Deck on Buchtel Avenue.

How do I find out who my assigned adviser is?
When you sign into Zipline and go to the student tab, you will find a link to Academics on the left-hand side of the student page. That link allows you to access your assigned academic adviser. If you aren't sure, call 330-972-7430 and the staff of the advising center will tell you who your assigned adviser is.

How do I contact my adviser if I have a question?
You can e-mail your adviser from the link on his/her webpage.

If an e-mail is not enough or if my adviser tells me to make an appointment, how do I make an appointment with my adviser?
Contact the Academic Advisement Center at 330-972-7430. The staff there can set up an appointment for you.

I've heard students talk about walk-in advising. What is it?
Throughout the day, one or two advisers are on duty and can see students who do not have an appointment, but who have a quick question or concern. Depending on your question or concern, you may be asked to make a 30-minute appointment if your needs cannot be addressed in a 10-minute walk-in time frame.

Registering for Classes

How do I drop/add a class?
Visit the Registrar's site for details: http://www.uakron.edu/registrar. It is usually a good idea to see an adviser, if only for a walk-in appointment, before you drop/add classes to avoid making changes to your schedule that might jeopardize your advancement to a degree-granting college.

How do I find out when I am eligible to register for my classes?
Sign on to Zipline and click on the ‘Student’ tab. Select ‘Academics’ in the left-hand menu and look for the link that says ‘Enrollment Appointment’ toward the center of the page. This link will give you the starting date (at 6:00 PM) that you are eligible to register for classes meeting the next semester. You can register any time after that date and prior to the start of classes, but keep in mind that popular classes and times go quickly.

I can’t register because Zipline tells me that I have a HOLD. Why do I have a hold on my account?
Holds are sometimes academic, such as an adviser-placed hold for a student under an academic contract such as a PLUS agreement or the Academic Action Form required at an IAM Workshop. Other holds are financial. For a definitive reason and more information about possibly removing a hold, contact your adviser. Because holds always delay your registering for your classes, it is a good idea to check your account periodically so that if possible, you can have any holds removed before your enrollment appointment.

Academics

What is University College?
Unless you are directly admitted to a degree-granting college, you will be admitted to University College (UC). In University College you will work on your major and on meeting the pre-admission requirements to your degree-granting college with the help of your academic adviser.

What is a degree-granting college?
These are the eight colleges within The University of Akron that have the authority to grant a degree. These include The Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Fine and Applied Arts, the College of Nursing, the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, and Summit College. Wayne College is a regional campus of The University of Akron located in Wayne County.

I’ve heard that if I am an ‘Exploratory Student,’ that is, I have not yet declared a major, I can just take a few semesters to complete the General Education requirements and then declare a major. Is that correct?
In a word, no. True, everyone must, regardless of major, complete the 42 General Education requirements. These courses are the foundation of all of our degree programs, and because they are, some majors are very proscriptive and require that certain of the General Education requirements be taken to fulfill a curricular requirement for that major. In other words, you could complete your General Education requirements, but once you’ve declared your major, be required to take some additional courses listed on the General Education sheet. While some of the ‘extra’ classes you may have taken before declaring a major may be applicable to the ‘free electives’ section of your major (if there is one), sometimes, those ‘extra classes’ are exactly that – extra. For that reason, it is important that your discussion of possible majors and careers with your adviser is an ongoing one.

What is an ICT?
ICT stands for ‘Inter-College Transfer’. A student in University College who has met the criteria for his/her degree-granting college or any student who wants to move from one degree-granting college to another must meet with an adviser who will fill out the ICT form and sign it. At that point, both the student’s file and the student are transferred to the new college.

How do I complete an ICT?
Please make an appointment with your academic or faculty adviser.

Why do I need to complete an ICT?
You cannot graduate from The University of Akron unless you have been admitted to a degree-granting college and completed your degree requirements there.

Does UA have a class repeat policy?
The University of Akron has a ‘repeat for change of grade’ policy that allows a student two attempts to repeat a class for which he/she has earned a C- or less. The new grade, whether it is higher or lower, replaces the earlier grade in the student’s GPA. The earlier grade(s) is/are not erased from the transcript. There are some exceptions to this repeat policy; therefore, contact your academic adviser if you aren’t sure that you are permitted to repeat a class for a change of grade.

Why would I want to repeat a class for a change of grade?
Retaking a class for a change of grade can improve your GPA faster than taking more classes and doing well. If you repeat a class and do better, the lower grade disappears from your GPA and is replaced with the new, hopefully higher grade. For example, if you take 12 credits in the fall semester (four 3 credit classes) and earn two Bs and two Fs, your GPA will be 1.33. If you repeat the classes for which you earned an F and earn Bs, your new GPA will be a 3.0 for that term. Then, if you take four 3-credit classes the following term and earn all Bs, your GPA will remain at 3.0. If instead, you simply take four more 3 credit classes and earn all Bs, your GPA will go to only a 2.25 after being combined with the 1.33 you earned for fall semester. Whether or not you should repeat a class for a change of grade is an issue you should discuss with your academic adviser who will help you decide if the additional time and money involved in repeating a class are to your benefit.

How do I CLEP a class or obtain credit by examination?
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a national program that offers the opportunity of obtaining college credit by examination. Please check the Undergraduate Bulletin (page 47 for 2004-2005) for further information.

Do my ACT scores earn me any college credit?
A student’s ACT/SAT scores are used for admission and placement purposes only.

How do I qualify for 'bypass' credit?
If, on the basis of appropriate placement test scores, you place into one of the established course sequences eligible for 'bypassed credit' (see Bypassed Credit section of the current Undergraduate Bulletin), you may apply for this credit after successfully completing the course you take and earning a grade of 'C' or better. Apply for bypassed credit by coming in to the Academic Advisement Center where an adviser will fill out a bypassed credit form for you, verify your qualifying grade, and sign the form. Then, for $5 per credit, you can purchase your bypassed credits by taking the signed bypass form to the Cashier in Simmons Hall and having the registrar post your bypassed credits.

What about A.P. credit?
If you have qualifying A.P. scores, those scores must be sent to The University of Akron by the AP Testing Center. When the Academic Advisement Center receives the list of qualifying scores from the AP Board, you will be sent a letter that will explain how to claim your credits in qualifying classes. For a list of classes that can be bypassed for qualifying AP scores, see page 46 of the 2004-2005 Undergraduate Bulletin.

What do I do if I get an INC or 'incomplete' grade?
An INC or ‘I’ grade indicates that the student has done passing work in a class, but for a good and acceptable reason, some aspect of the course requirements has not been completed by the end of the enrolled term. If the work is not completed by the date that grades are due for the next term, the INC or ‘I’ grade reverts to an F in the course.

How do I change my major?
Please make an appointment with your adviser to discuss changing your major.

Can I have more than one major?
Yes! Keep reading!

What is a dual degree? Is that the same as a double major?
Please see the Advising Glossary (Academic Advisement Center’s main web page, left-hand menu) for an explanation of the difference between a double major, a dual degree, and/or adding a minor to a major.

Where can I look to find the majors/degrees offered by UA?
Look on the Academic Advisement Center’s main web page. Click on 'Majors' icon.

How many credits are required for graduation from The University of Akron?
The minimum number of credits a student needs to graduate from The University of Akron is 128 (some majors require more than 128 depending on the field of study) with a minimum 2.0 GPA (This is a variable number, too). Please see the individual degree/graduation requirements in the Undergraduate Bulletin.

Readmit or Dismissal

I have been dismissed from the university. How do I get re-admitted?
If this is your first dismissal, contact the University Dean’s office. You will need to attend an Individual Academic Management (IAM) workshop where you will be placed under an academic contract (AAF) for the following semester. The presenters at the workshop will go over the purpose of the contract, the student’s responsibilities while under contract, and other issues and concerns that underlie academic probation/dismissal.

What is academic probation?
A student who fails to maintain a grade point average of 2.00 (‘C’) is placed on academic probation and may be subject to a change of courses, dismissal, or some other form of discipline. Academic discipline is determined by the dean of the college in which the student is enrolled. Reinstatement of a student is determined by the dean of the college from which the student was dismissed. Once dismissed from the University, the student is not eligible to register for credit courses until readmitted.

What is an SOS workshop?
An SOS (Save Our Semester) Workshop is designed as an academic intervention strategy for those freshmen who do not achieve at an acceptable level during their first semester at The University of Akron. If you receive a letter from the Dean of University College advising you that you are required to attend an SOS Workshop, please follow the instructions in the letter.

What is an IAM workshop?
Students who have been academically dismissed from the university or who are transferring from another institution into the University of Akron under probation (under a 2.0) are required to attend an Individual Academic Management (IAM) workshop. Please see ‘I have been dismissed. . . ‘ as outlined above.

What is the Academic Action Form (AAF)?
The Academic Action Form (AAF) is an academic contract between the student and the University. If you are required to attend an IAM Workshop, you will sign an AAF.

I have been admitted to UA as a 'transfer on probation.' What does that mean?
Transfer on probation means that you earned under a 2.0 at your former school. At The University of Akron you will be placed under an academic contract (AAF) for one semester during which time you will be required to fulfill contractual obligations that will optimize your success at UA. If all contractual requirements are met during your initial semester at UA, you may be taken off probation.

General

What is a pre-requisite or a pre-req.?
Many classes require coursework that needs to be completed before taking another class. This coursework is the pre-requisite for that class. For example, the pre-requisite for Developmental Psychology is Introduction to Psychology. Generally, web enrollment will block your enrollment in any class for which there is a pre-req. if you have not completed that pre-req.

What are 'developmental classes'?
Students are placed into developmental classes based on their ACT/SAT and COMPASS placement scores. Developmental classes help students to increase their academic skills so that they can compete academically at the college level. Although these classes do not earn students university credits toward graduation*, they do prepare students for greater success in their college level coursework. *Although developmental coursework does not earn students credits toward graduation, the classes do carry ‘load hours’. These ‘load hours’ count toward full-time status and toward financial aid eligibility.

My COMPASS scores were low, but I know that I can do better. Can I re-take the COMPASS placement test or tests?
Yes. Please see your adviser.

I am transferring from another university/college. Does my GPA from my previous institution transfer to UA, or do just the credits transfer?
Your transfer GPA may be used for a direct admission to a particular degree-granting college here at The University of Akron, but you will generate a new GPA from your time of admission to The University of Akron upon completion of your first class(es). The University of Akron will accept transfer work from an accredited college or university for any class which meets the Ohio Transfer Module. Please see ‘Transfer Services’ located on the Academic Advisement Center’s main web page.

What is considered 'full-time'?
To be considered a full-time student, you must be enrolled in 12 credits or more during a given semester. Full-time enrollment is 6 credits during summer sessions.

What is the university attendance policy?
A student is expected to attend all meetings of a class for which he/she is registered. A student may be dropped from a course by the dean if absences are repeated, and the instructor recommends this action; a student can gain re-admission only with permission of both dean and instructor. A student who does not drop the course receives an ‘F’ which counts as work attempted whenever grade-point ratio calculations are made.

Where can I get a copy of my transcript for my own records or to be sent to another institution?
There is a link on ZipLine that take you right to the registrar’s website and a request for a transcript.

Where is the bookstore?
There are two on-campus Barnes & Noble bookstores. One is located in the Student Union and the other in the Polsky Building.

Where can I find contact information for an instructor?
Contact information for your instructor is usually included on your course syllabus.

Can I appeal a grade?
Your first line of query if you are appealing or questioning a grade is to contact your instructor. If for some reason you cannot reach your instructor or if you are not satisfied with the outcome of that conversation, contact the head of the department under which your instructor teaches.

Work from other institutions

I’ve heard that I can take classes as a guest (or transient student) at another university or college. How do I make sure that the credits for those classes transfer back to UA?
First of all, pick up a Transient Student Permission Form in the UC Dean’s Office or in the Academic Advisement Center. Fill out all pertinent information and turn the form in to the UC Dean’s Office. A dean in that office will check to make sure that the course you are planning to take at another university is equivalent to the course at The University of Akron that you are hoping to bypass. Once the dean has signed your form, it will be returned to you. Then, you must follow the transient student enrollment instructions usually provided on the other school’s website. Each student is limited to a maximum of 18 hours of transient credit.

Can I get credit for military experience and training?
Yes. Please contact the Transfer Specialist in the Academic Advisement Center at 330-972-7430 or click on the link to ‘Transfer Information’ on the AAC’s main website.
