Loyal alumna, decorated Army officer Lori Sigrist retires

06/06/2013

The University of Akron congratulates Lt. Col. Lori D. Sigrist ’90, who recently retired as the second director of the U.S. Military’s Graduate Program in Nutrition, a highly esteemed master’s and dietetic internship program for Army and Air Force officers at Baylor University.

Over the years, Sigrist, a registered dietician, has been a dedicated and supportive alumna, returning many times to the University to talk with students in the dietetic program. She has been especially supportive of UA graduates who apply for U.S. Army education programs, specifically the Army Dietetic Internship.

Sigrist’s own 23-year military career began with an internship in San Antonia, which included a direct commission as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Medical Specialist Corps. Prior to her final post at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she served from 2008 to 2013, she held increasingly responsible positions in the field of nutrition and dietetics with assignments at Moncrief Army Community Hospital in Fort Jackson, S.C.; Evans Army Community Hospital in Fort Carson, Colo.; Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio; the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa.; and the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Mass.

Along the way, Sigrist managed to further her education. She earned a master’s in healthcare administration from Chapman University in 1995 and a Ph.D. in nutrition from Colorado State University in 2004, and she graduated from the Combined Arms Services Staff School and the Command and General Staff College. In addition, she earned certifications in sports dietetics from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and in strength and conditioning from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Sigrist’s military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal; the Army Commendation Medal; and the Army Medical Department “A” proficiency designator, signifying the highest recognition for professional excellence. Sigrist also is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit, which recognizes her contributions to Army Medicine during the course of her exemplary career.
