New Landscape for Learning
We continuously strive to enhance the learning environment on our campus. For example, our Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) enables faculty to hone their teaching abilities by promoting faculty mentoring, educational technology, new methods of instruction, service learning and more.

We also are actively involved in improving the learning environment before a student enters college. As a partner in the Northeast Ohio Center of Excellence for Mathematics and Science Education (NEOCEx), we help students of all ages and grade levels to improve their performance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In 2006, we received $340,000 from the Ohio Board of Regents to conduct a five-week Summer STEM Academy to encourage more high school students to pursue teaching careers in these areas.

The University also is a partner with the City of Akron, Akron Public Schools and the National Inventors Hall of Fame to create a middle school, located inside the Hall of Fame, that focuses on STEM subjects. Our efforts even extend to the earliest, most basic years of a student’s education. UA is one of three universities that comprise the Reading First Ohio Center, a consortium that gives teachers in grades K – 3 access to the latest practices and ideas for improving literacy.

This relentless quest for educational excellence at all levels began to pay dividends in 2006. Last fall, UA’s freshmen enrollment increased 16 percent and overall enrollment climbed 4 percent.
