The Region
Our Boundaries
Regional collaboration is the key to success in today’s global economy. Two upcoming events will demonstrate the University’s continuing commitment to regional cooperation and advancement. The University of Akron and Lorain County Community College have entered into an unprecedented alliance that will accelerate educational efficiency, knowledge creation and economic development within an area we are calling the Innovation Alliance. By combining the collective resources of a community college and a research university, the alliance will stimulate economic development and catalyze innovation in education, government, healthcare, manufacturing and high-growth industries. UA also participates in numerous joint degree programs with the region’s other higher education institutions. These consortiums combine resources to offer students such high-value programs as “critical languages” like Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Farsi. Such collaborations make prudent use of taxpayer support.

In January 2008, UA will open a 30,000-square-foot Medina County University Center (MCUC) in a new technology park in Lafayette Township, just south of the city of Medina. While not a branch campus, this unique educational facility is designed to identify and respond to the region’s economic development needs. The state-of-the-art MCUC will deliver traditional and newly developed specialized certificate programs, customized training, video-conferencing, Web-based instruction and on-sight programming for local companies, as well as credit and noncredit college coursework.

Regional economies
                                    are the building blocks of
                                    U.S. competitiveness.

These latest initiatives are a further extension of our ongoing efforts to support the regional economy. UA’s 12 colleges and schools maintain more than 600 collaborative projects, programs and agreements with other education institutions, government agencies and industry groups. From transfer/ articulation agreements, to joint research programs, to workforce development services, we embrace active partnerships with all constituencies in our dynamic, regional economy. During 2006, we also continued our public information campaign of print advertisements that called for a stronger regional identity and greater collaboration among higher education, industry and government.
Through a print ad campaign, the University has used a dramatic nighttime satellite image to promote regional cooperation in Northeast Ohio
