| In 2006, The University received nearly $12 million in direct or affiliate funding from the Ohio Third Frontier Research Commercialization Grant Program. The majority of the funds will increase UA’s leadership in the development of next-generation electronic, photonic and high-performance nanocomposite products. | Dr. George Newkome, vice president of research and dean of the graduate school, explained that this research is focused on innovations that will serve many of the largestgrowing markets of the century, including high-performance optics and next-generation televisions. “The integration of multiple technologies will create new jobs at all levels across large portions of the state.” | Last year Akron also joined The Ohio State University, the University of Cincinnati and other public research institutions in reallocating a portion of their state funding for doctoral programs as part of the Ohio Board of Regent’s new Economic Growth Challenge/Innovation Incentive initiative. The program seeks to expand the state’s economic development by enhancing the expertise and abilities of its state universities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math. In 2006, we announced the creation of a Ph.D. in Integrative Biosciences degree program. |
