"No one benefits from the slow approach, the easy pass through academia where we set up a course that is free from bumps and unexpected ravines. The reality is that none of us, from the free-wielding liberal arts degree to the set-in-stone vocational degree, is spared from the economy and world market.

Why, then, . . . would you miss the opportunity to set yourself apart? An internship . . . gives you, believe it or not, an actual edge. Not only is it a resume filler, it is a resume enhancer.

My work at The University of Akron Press set me apart from the others. I firmly believe that this actual real-time, real-world experience, was one of the deciding factors in my acceptance into graduate school and in receiving a graduate assistantship. It said I was a worker – it said I was more than just credit numbers and a total GPA. Do the work, show up, and be better than a warm body.
