Athletic Training Education Program

Program Goals

The goal of the program is to provide athletic training students comprehensive training through coursework and clinical experiences in the areas of:
  • Risk Management and Injury Prevention
  • Pathology of Injury and Illness
  • Orthopedic Clinical Examination and Diagnosis
  • Medical Conditions and Disabilities
  • Acute Care of Injuries and Illnesses
  • Therapeutic Modalities
  • Conditioning and Rehabilitative Exercise
  • Pharmacology
  • Psychosocial Intervention and Referral
  • Nutritional Aspects of Injuries and Illnesses
  • Health Care Administration
  • Professional Development and Responsibility

For your convenience, a 4-year academic plan has been developed by the ATEP faculty. This plan will provide you with the proper sequencing of courses to ensure that you meet all academic requirements of the University of Akron, College of Education, and the Athletic Training Education Program.

Program Prerequisites

To be considered for admittance into the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) students must meet the following requirements:
  • Receive a C or higher in the following courses:
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology I
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology I Lab
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology II
    • Human Anatomy & Physiology II Lab
    • First Aid & CPR for the Professional Rescuer
    • Introduction to Athletic Training
    • Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries
    • Care & Prevention of Athletic Injuries Lab
  • A 2.5 accumulative GPA
The ATEP Handbook has a thorough explanation of the ATEP policies and procedures. All students enrolled in the ATEP are required to follow such policies and procedures.
