Akron Zips achieving the American dream

Where can your student go after UA? Meet four proud alumni in our new promotional campaign who say their Akron experience enabled them to reach the top of their fields and achieve the American dream. They have distinguished themselves in such diverse fields as business, performing arts, law and computer science. Through their own successes, they have inspired others. See who's featured.

Spring Career Fairs

It is almost time for the 2015 UA Spring Career Fairs! Please encourage your student to attend one or both events to network with hundreds of employers looking to hire for internships/co-ops and full-time employment opportunities.
Engineering and Science Career Fair
Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Student Union Ballroom
All engineering, science, technology and computer majors are encouraged to attend this job fair. Students must register and pay $5 for this fair in the Engineering Co-op office in Auburn Science and Engineering Center 203 by Friday, Feb. 20.

UA Career Fair (for all other majors)
Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Student Union Ballroom
This fair is free of charge to students and alumni and they do not need to preregister to attend.

Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and alumni are invited to attend. Attendees will need to bring resumes and come professionally dressed. Parents and family members may even want to assist their student in putting together a professional outfit for the Career Fairs.

Additionally, the Career Center offers weekly resume writing and Career Link Job Search workshops, as well as workshops on preparing for the Career Fairs a week before the events. Students can call the Career Center at 330-972-7747 to sign up for a workshop or receive more information; walk-ins are welcome.

FAFSA deadline is March 1

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) looks at a number of factors, such as income, and then determines what type(s) of aid your student qualifies for, like Federal Work Study, and for how many dollars.

Even if your student does not plan on accepting any aid, it is very important to complete and submit the FAFSA. Should you or your student’s financial situation change after March 1, federal funds become extremely limited. Get started at fafsa.ed.gov.

Deadline extended to register for Alternative Spring Break

There are a few spots available for 2015 Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trips, March 21–27. The deadline to apply is Friday, Feb. 13. Project sites include Camp Twin Lakes (GA - FSL trip), Habitat for Humanity (SC), N.C. Coastal Federation (NC), and a variety of agencies here in Akron (OH). Learn more at uakron.edu/asb.

Register now online for Parents Winter Weekend

More than 225 parents and family members have already signed up to join their Zip for the inaugural Parents Winter Weekend, Feb. 21-22!

Take a look at the schedule of events or register online at uakron.edu/pfa. Deadline to register is Monday, Feb. 16. Hotel group rates are available for a limited time.

Scheduling for summer and fall classes

Enrollment for summer classes begins March 2. Summer is an ideal time for students to take additional courses to stay on track. We recommend that students complete 30-32 credit hours per calendar year to graduate on time. See how graduating on time can save thousands of dollars.

Students should schedule an appointment to meet with their academic advisor in the next few weeks to determine if summer classes are needed to catch up or get ahead to allow time for internship and co-op opportunities.
