Celebrate the arts during Arts Awareness Month in April at The University of Akron. Nearly 50 arts events are slated, including music concerts, dance and theatre performances, art exhibitions and lectures. All are open to the public, and most are free.

Now in its 12th year, Arts Awareness Month is sponsored every April by the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Call ext. 5196 for a complete calendar of events.

The American New Arts Festival will be part of Arts Awareness Month again this year. In conjunction with the festival, the Society of Composers, Inc., will present its 36th national conference on campus. Composers from throughout the country will attend to hear their works performed by UA’s Solaris Woodwind Quintet, Paragon Brass Quintet, Percussion Ensemble, Symphonic and Concert Bands, and Symphony Orchestra. Also performing will be the Akron Youth Symphony Orchestra and Hierarchy, a new music and art duo featuring visual artist and teacher Christine Gorbach of Cuyahoga Falls High School and composer Gary Lee Nelson of the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music.

Venues for the American New Arts Festival include Guzzetta Recital Hall, Sandefur Theatre and Folk Hall as well as the Akron Art Museum. Michael Daugherty, composer-in-residence with the Detroit Symphony, will be the guest composer.

Daniel McCarthy, UA associate professor of music, founded the American New Arts Festival in 2001.

“The festival is an opportunity to explore great art created in our own time,” says McCarthy. “Having so many nationally known composers here on campus for the performance of their music is an exciting addition to this year’s events.” (Call ext. 2199 or visit www.under.org/cpcc/sci.htm for details about the American New Arts Festival and the Society of Composers conference.)

Also, in April and May, “Reflections on Glass: The Photography of Willard Penfield Seiberling,” will be displayed in the Guzzetta Hall Atrium. The exhibit is a visual time capsule of Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, and of America during the Industrial Revolution. The photographs by Willard Penfield Seiberling, the son of F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling, chronicle family occasions, civic events and scenes from Seiberling’s life at Stan Hywet and later at Princeton. The exhibit also features interpretive text, vintage advertisements, mixed media and historical objects. Call ext. 5196 for details.
