Alan Newman

Alan Newman, law, was appointed reporter to the Joint Committee of the Ohio Bankers League and the Ohio State Bar Asso-ciation on the Uniform Trust Code in March to draft modifications to the Uniform Trust Code for possible adoption in Ohio.

Amy Jarmon, law, was appointed assistant director for the continuing legal education seminar planned by the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association in Cambridge, England this summer.

Dana Cole

Dana Cole, law, was a member of the teaching faculty for Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers Seminar in Toccoa, Ga., March 5-9. The seminar was on jury selection and opening statement. Cole led small groups and gave a jury selection demonstration in a plenary session.

David McConnell and Katherine Owens

David McConnell and Katharine Owens, Center for Collaboration and Inquiry, were awarded grants of $400,000 and $100,000 by the Ohio Board of Regents for the Northeast University Center of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teacher Education.

David Ritchey, com-munication, has published an article titled “Seven Tourists and Seven Times as Much Money” in the April 9-15 issue of the “Romanian Business Journal.” Ritchey, a Senior Fulbright Scholar, is currently a visiting professor at the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest.

Harvey Sterns, Institute for Life-Span Development and Gerontology; and Elizabeth Kennedy-Hart, Community and Technical College, received $35,000 in federal funding through the University of Illinois for “Person-centered Planning for Later Life Curriculum Development and Research on Work (continued).”

J. Dean Carro, law, made a presentation on First Amendment Law to Stow Junior Leadership in March. Also in March, he presented an oral argument before the Ohio Supreme Court in State v. Butler, and taught two classes at Dover High School on criminal law.

Julia Beckett

Julia Beckett, public administration and urban studies, presented “Making Public Services More User-friendly — Experience From the Courts” at the 64th annual Conference of the American Society for Public Administration, held in Washington, D.C., from March 15-18. She also chaired a meeting of the society’s Section on Public Law and Administration at the conference. Beckett co-authored a paper titled “Back to the Future for Child Welfare: Lessons from the Past and ‘Planning’ Hopes for Tomorrow,” which was presented at conference.

Steve Cook, law, conducted a Law Day Seminar in March with clients of the Stark County Small Business Develop-ment Center to answer basic legal questions and present the services of the New Business Legal Clinic. He also participated in a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise job fair at the Akron Urban League, where he presented a brief overview of the clinic.
