Approximately 1,200 undergraduate and graduate candidates will receive degrees at The University of Akron’s Summer 2002 Commencement ceremonies on Aug. 24 at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.
University President Luis M. Proenza will give commencement addresses at the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. ceremonies. Two student speakers will represent the summer class of 2002. Andrea Wlaszyn, of Tallmadge, and an outstanding student from the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, will speak at the morning ceremony. Anthony Burwell, of East Cleveland, and an outstanding student from the College of Fine and Applied Arts, will speak at the afternoon ceremony.
The degrees conferred will include 41 doctoral, 456 master’s, 490 bachelor’s and 203 associate degrees. Crossing the stage at the morning ceremony will be candidates from the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Engineering, the College of Nursing and Wayne College. The afternoon ceremony will recognize candidates from the College of Education, the College of Fine and Applied Arts, the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering and the Community and Technical College.
“Gradfest,” UA’s traditional celebration for graduates, their families and friends, will be held on the E.J. Thomas Hall Terrace from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, festivities will move to the Goodrich Lobby in E.J. Thomas Hall. Sponsored by the Alumni Association, Gradfest features live entertainment, snacks and soft drinks, plenty of photo opportunities and an appearance by Zippy, UA’s mascot.
The commencement exercises may be viewed over the Internet at www.uakron.edu within 48 hours after the ceremony.
