Nearly 1,300 candidates will receive undergraduate and graduate degrees at Fall 2003 Commencement ceremonies at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Dec. 13.
University President Luis M. Proenza will give commencement addresses at both ceremonies. The degrees conferred will include 28 Juris Doctors, 44 doctoral, 296 master’s, 764 bachelor’s and 166 associate degrees.
Crossing the stage at the morning ceremony will be candidates from the College of Business Administration, College of Education, College of Engineering and Wayne College. The afternoon ceremony will recognize candidates from the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, College of Fine and Applied Arts, College of Nursing, Community and Technical College, and College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering,
Dr. Mark N. Apte, chairman emeritus of the University’s Board of Trustees, an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the morning ceremony.
Apte, who earned a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Bombay in 1964, was an associate professor of medicine when he came to the United States in 1968. Following training, he started a family practice in 1974, and today is president of Family Medical Care Inc. in Tallmadge, Ohio. He also is a member of the family practice departments of Akron General Medical Center and Summa Health Systems.
On July 2, 1994, Ohio Gov. George V. Voinovich appointed Apte to The University of Akron Board of Trustees for a nine-year term. During his tenure, Dr. Apte served on many committees, including the Facilities Oversight and Planning Committee, which designed the $200 million New Landscape for Learning campus improvement program; the Educational Policy/Student Affairs committee; and the Presidential Screening and Advisory Committee. He was named vice chairman of the Board in 1999, and became chairman in 2002. Upon the completion of his appointment in 2003, he was given the title Chairman Emeritus.
Apte’s service to the community includes being a trustee of the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority, and a former trustee of the Association of Indian Physicians of Northern Ohio; the John S. Knight Convention Center; and the Cleveland Music Circle, which promotes Indian Classical Music. Apte also is executive committee vice chairman the and finance committee member of the Summit County Republican Party.
“Gradfest,” the University’s traditional celebration for the graduates, their families and friends, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Goodrich Lobby of Thomas Hall. Sponsored by the Alumni Association, Gradfest features live entertainment, snacks and soft drinks, plenty of photo opportunities and an appearance by Zippy.
