Brian Pendleton, sociology, received a $20,587 U.S. Department of Justice Juvenile Accountability Incentive Block Grant through the Community Partnership of Summit County for the “Drug-Free Communities Support Program” and $25,000 from the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board for The University of Akron and Summit County Community Partnership Alcohol Abuse Reduction Initiative.”

David Huskins, Center for Policy Studies, prepared a report for Yokwe.Net from U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service data on the number of residents from the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and Palau entering the United States. The report was published in the Marshall Islands Journal.

Frank Harris, William Brittain, Stephen Cheng, Mark Foster, Wayne Mattice, George Newkome and Alexei Sokolov, polymer science; Liming Dai and Thein Kyu, polymer engineering; and Sergei Lyuksyutov, physics, were awarded $300,000 by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research for the Collabor-ative Center in Polymer Photonics.

Michael Cheung

Michael Cheung, chemical engineering, was elected in November to serve as programming chair for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Area 1c Interfacial Phenomena for 2003-2006 at the organization’s annual meeting in Indianapolis in November. He served as program vice chair for 2000-2003. Also at that meeting, Cheung served as co-chair for the Sympo-sium on Nanostructured Fluids: Fundamentals and Applications.
