The UA Forum Series is supported by the Office of the President and the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost as well as the John S. Knight Foundation, the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics and the University Program Board. Each forum event is coordinated with a variety of campus lectures, discussions and workshops.

Dr. Drew Pinsky
Considered a trusted source of information and advice on drugs, sex and relationships, Pinsky has co-hosted the nationally syndicated call-in radio show “Loveline” for 18 years. In 1996, he and co-host Adam Carolla took the show to the MTV Network and had a successful five-year run. In 1998, the pair released “The Dr. Drew and Adam Book: A Survival Guide to Life and Love.”

In addition, Pinsky, a board-certified internist and addictionalogist, is a USA Weekend magazine contributing editor and a regular on “Good Morning America.” He has made guest appearances on the “The View” and “Larry King Live” and been profiled in such publications as Time, Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report.

A graduate of Amherst College and the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Pinsky is medical director for the Department of Chemical Dependency Services at Pasadena’s Las Encinas Hospital. He also has a private clinical medicine practice and is a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.

Pinsky’s appearance is sponsored by the University Program Board. Along with UPB, the Pride Center, the Coming Together Project, the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics and the Victim Assistance Program of Akron will sponsor a series of events during the fall semester to complement Pinsky’s talk.

“An Evening with Coretta Scott King” will be presented on Jan. 27. Her appearance is sponsored by E.J. Thomas Hall.

Coretta Scott King
Coretta Scott King, the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., has devoted her life to social justice and peace. She travels the world to speak out on such issues as racial and economic justice, women’s and children’s rights, gay and lesbian rights, religious freedom, the needs of the poor and homeless, full-employment, health care and educational opportunities. She also has led goodwill missions to Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Much of King’s time also has been devoted to the creation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, which now covers three full blocks and houses a library and archives of the civil rights movement in Atlanta, Ga.

King has published a collection of her husband’s quotations, “The Words of Martin Luther King Jr., and written her autobiography, “My Life with Martin Luther King Jr.” She has helped to found a number of organizations, including the Black Leadership Forum, the National Black Coalition for Voter Participation and the Black Leadership Roundtable.

A native of Heiberger, Ala., King is a graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Her efforts have been recognized by honorary doctorates from more than 40 colleges and universities.

“The Times We Live In” is the title for David Brooks’ talk on March 10. The Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics is sponsoring his appearance.

David Brooks
A senior editor at The Weekly Standard, Brooks is considered a savvy observer of present day politics. He also is a contributing editor at Newsweek and the Atlantic Monthly, and the “Machine Age” columnist for the New York Times Magazine. He is a regular commentator on National Public Radio, CNN’s “Late Edition” and “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.”

A 1983 graduate of the University of Chicago, Brooks is the author of “Bobos In Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There.” He also edited the anthology, “Backward and Upward: The New Conservative Writing.”

Prior to joining The Weekly Standard at its inception in 1995, Brooks spent nine years at the Wall Street Journal. During his tenure he covered Russia, the Middle East, South Africa and European affairs.

The University Honors Program is bringing Lani Guinier to campus on April 7.

Guinier is the first black woman to be appointed to a tenured professorship at Harvard Law School. Prior to joining Harvard in 1998, Guinier was a tenured professor for 10 years at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Lani Guinier
A graduate of Radcliffe College of Harvard University and Yale Law School, Guinier is the author of many articles and books that deal with democratic theory, political representation, educational equity, and issues of race and gender.

Guinier came to public attention when she was nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993 to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, only to have her name withdrawn without a confirmation hearing. Guinier wrote of the experience in “Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice.”

A recipient of eight honorary degrees, Guinier has been given numerous other awards as well, including the 1995 Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award from the American Bar Association’s Commission on Women in the Profession, the Champion of Democracy Award from the National Women's Political Caucus and the Rosa Parks Award from the American Association for Affirmative Action.

The 2002-03 season of the UA Forum Series will conclude on April 28 when Gerald R. Ford delivers the annual Dorothy Garrett Martin Memorial Delta Gamma Lectureship on Values and Ethics.

“Values/Ethics — Are They Important? Meaningful?” is the title for the former president’s talk.

Gerald R. Ford
Ford became vice president in 1973 and president in 1974 after the resignation of Richard Nixon.

During his term, Ford worked to restore the confidence of the American people. On the domestic front he battled inflation, recession and energy shortages while working to strengthen relationships with America’s allies and reduce Middle East tensions. Ford also directed the final withdrawal of Americans and refugees from Indochina as the Vietnam War ended.

Ford, a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale University Law School, had already distinguished himself as a public servant long before becoming president. After Navy service in World War II, Ford was in the House of Representatives for 25 years, and was selected as minority leader in 1965.

Since he left the presidency in 1977, Ford has written an autobiography, presented lectures, established the Gerald R. Ford Library, campaigned extensively for the Republican Party, and participated in various fundraising projects and charitable events.

In October 1999, Ford and his wife, Betty, received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award given by Congress. More recently, Ford was awarded a Profile in Courage award by the John F. Kennedy Library.
