The University of Akron will hold its first-ever Health and Fitness Expo on Oct. 10 at the John S. Knight Center, 77 Mill St., Akron from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The expo also will serve as the kick-off for another first — the inaugural Road Runner Akron Marathon and Marathon Relay, which will be held on Oct. 11 from about 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The expo will be free and open to the public so that area residents as well as the campus community can enjoy a wide range of health and fitness exhibitions and seminars. More than 70 vendors and organizations will have booths set up at the expo — from University units to area businesses and nonprofit groups.

The marathon is a world-class event that is expected to draw 5,000 runners from around the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Runners will begin at the Lockheed-Martin Airdock and eventually be routed through campus, using Union Street to Buchtel Common before they follow a route past E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall to South Broadway. The route will continue through much of West Akron before concluding at Canal Park at the corner of State and Main streets.

The University’s expo will serve as the site for registered runners to pick up race bibs, chips and information. Individuals who want to race and have not registered can do so through Oct. 1 at www.akronmarathon.org .

Also, volunteers are still needed for both the race and the expo. Individuals who volunteer their time will receive a free T-shirt. To sign up, contact Ann Bitong at annebitong@mainstreetgourmet.com or 330-929-0000.

Here are some expo highlights:

* Running celebrity Bill Rogers will discuss his winning experiences.

* Running humorist John Bingham (the Penguin) will be on hand to relay

experiences.

* Sports experts will provide information on training, hydration, nutrition, stretching and answer questions

* General Mills will provide the opportunity for attendees to have their

likeness on a Wheaties box photo.

* Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Ricky Feacher will promote

“Vision for Life” products and sign autographs.

* A wide variety of sports apparel, shoes and accessory vendors, including

designer sunglasses and jewelry, will be available.
