The University of Akron Forum Series has an impressive roster of speakers for its ninth year, beginning on Sept. 29 with Katie Couric, one of today’s most accomplished journalists.

Katie Couric
Other speakers in the series are Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor at PBS’s “Washington Week;” Dr. Wayne Dyer, best-selling author of self-help books; Art Linkletter, television personality; Chuck D, leader and co-founder of rap group Public Enemy; and Tim Russert, managing editor and moderator of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” who is the John S. Knight Lecturer.

All six lectures will be held in E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. A subscription for the first five events can be purchased for $15 with a University I.D. Single tickets are $4 each with a UA I.D. Admission to the John S. Knight Lectureship is free, but a ticket is required. For more information, call the Thomas Hall Ticket Office at ext. 7570.

The series is supported by the Office of the President and the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost, as well as various campus units and community organizations.

Summa Health System is sponsoring the talk by Katie Couric on Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. The longtime co-anchor of NBC’s “Today Show” will speak on “Colon Health.”

The time of the event was dictated by Couric’s schedule. Because a large attendance is expected, including many visitors to campus, the following parking locations will be reserved from early morning until the event begins at 1 p.m.:

Lot 28 — the E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall deck

Lot 27 — the surface lot on Hill Street, directly across from Thomas Hall

Lot 26, first level — the bottom level of the North Campus Parking Deck on Buchtel Avenue.

Alternative parking for faculty, staff and students will be available at the following east campus locations:

Lot 1 — East Campus Parking Deck on Spicer Street between Buchtel Avenue and Carroll Street

Lots 8, 9 and 10 — surface parking near the Ocasek Natatorium on Spicer, Carroll and Vine streets.

Parking maps and information are available at http://www.uakron.edu/parking/ .

Couric, who has worked tirelessly to end the threat of colorectal cancer since losing her husband, Jay Monahan, to the disease in 1998, helped found the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance in March 2000. The organization supports education, new research and regular medical screenings.

In May 2001, Couric received a George Foster Peabody Award for her series “Confronting Colon Cancer,” which aired in March 2000. The series also contributed to NBC News receiving the 2001 Edward R. Murrow Award.

Gwen Ifill
Couric’s work has been honored many times throughout her nearly 25-year career. Her awards include six Emmys and the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi award.

“Politics, Policy and Reality: What’s Really Going on in Washington” will be presented by Gwen Ifill on Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics is sponsoring her visit.

Dyer, who has a doctorate in counseling psychotherapy, has been called the “father of motivation” by his fans. He has written several self-help best-sellers, including, “Your Erroneous Zones,” “Pulling Your Own Strings” and “You’ll See It When You Believe It.”

His talk, is sponsored by Akron General Medical Center, St. Jude Medical and PBS 45 & 49. There will be a book sale before his presentation, and a book sale and signing following Dyer’s talk.

He is best known for his roles on “House Party” and “People Are Funny.” He is the author of 23 books in all, including “Kids Say the Darndest Things” one of the top 14 best sellers in American publishing history.

Chuck D
“An Evening with Chuck D” will be sponsored by the University Program Board on March 2 at 7:30 p.m. Chuck D is leader of the rap group Public Enemy, which he co-founded in the late ’80s.

Chuck D has redefined rap music and the Hip Hop culture. He also is an author, commentator, major proponent of music on the Internet and a regular guest on such television shows as “Nightline.”
