Incoming First-Year Students

Admissions Criteria

New high school graduates are typically admitted into University College where they begin their course work before transferring to a degree-granting college, such ast the BCAS, in their second year.  However, there are three exceptions whereby incoming first-year students can be directly admitted into their degree-granting college:

  • Incoming first-year students who are accepted into the Honors College as Arts & Sciences majors are automatically admitted into the Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Incoming first-year students demonstrating high academic achievement in high school may receive direct admission into the Buchtel College of Arts & Sciences upon application to the university.  The academic standards for direct admission are competitive, vary by each BCAS department, and are provided on a separate department criteria list.  However, generally students admissible to the BCAS have satisfied the following criteria:
    • Upper 50% of high school graduating class;
    • Completion of the Core Curriculum;
    • Depending on department a minimum 2.75 high school GPA; and
    • Depending on department a minimum 20 ACT or 880 SAT.
  • Home-schooled students may apply for direct admission to BCAS.  An admissions committee will review the application and use the academic preparation review process to identify students eligible to begin their course work as a direct admit student into a BCAS department.
  • Since the standards for direct admission are selective and determined by each academic department in the college, you can find out more by contacting that department directly or speaking with a BCAS Adviser at (330) 972-7880 or (330) 972-5297.

If accepted into BCAS, a student will receive a letter of acceptance and is required to meet with a BCAS academic adviser. During this initial intake appointment students will be introduced to BCAS policies, procedures and academic programs. In addition, within two weeks of admission, students will be informed of their assigned academic adviser. Students can locate their assigned academic adviser in ZipLine.

Students who are not admitted to BCAS will receive a letter explaining why admission was denied and offered an opportunity to meet with a BCAS academic adviser to explore academic actions to enhance their likelihood of meeting eligibility requirements for admission to BCAS in the future.

If you have questions, please consult with a BCAS academic adviser, by calling (330) 972-7880 or (330) 972-5297 to schedule an appointment.
