How do distance learning courses work?
Distance learning courses allow students and instructors to participate in classes from different locations. The instruction is delivered through two-way INTERACTIVE video sessions which utilize instructor-to-student, student-to-instructor, and student-to-student communication through a special web-based software that allows for synchronous discussions. The instructor and students are equipped with microphones, while each room is equipped with several cameras, so that each participant may always see and hear the rest of the class.

Why take a distance learning course?
The University of Akron is one of the few universities in the United States and the only program in Ohio which offers a Certificate in Applied Politics and a Master of Applied Politics. This program focuses on practical politics and efforts to influence political decisions including winning elections, influencing legislation, and strengthening political organizations. Distance learning courses are an excellent option for students interested in these programs or practical politics who are unable to travel to the Akron campus, but are still interested in pursuing a degree or in career advancement.

Do you get different credit for completing distance learning courses than you do for on-campus courses?
Because students at all locations are required to achieve the same learning outcomes, course credit is the same. Distance learning courses and face-to-face courses expect the same performance standards and receive the same transcript credit.

How do I take tests and turn in assignments if I'm not on campus?
Many distance learning courses use WebCT, an online classroom, to assign and collect projects, papers, and tests. Instructors also may offer online examinations or will make arrangements for proctored exams.

When do distance learning courses begin?
Courses run on a semster basis in the fall, spring, and summer. Fall and spring courses begin in September and January respectively, while summer courses begin at varying times. Individual courses do have a specific start and finish date, and meet at the same time every week. This type of course allows students and instructors to learn together as a group. Students benefit from intellectual exchange with their networked comrades, much as students in a face to face environment gain from working as a group.
