Mr. Thomas A. Williams, Vice-President and Chief Human Resource Officer of Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Inc., will be CBA’s distinguished Graduate Executive Forum speaker. The title of the lecture is "The Real HR.”

Mr. Williams joined Jo-Ann Fabrics in February 1998. His responsibilities include all aspects of the Human Resource function from the developing of leaders, to executive compensation, to employee relations, to the administration of the various benefit programs. Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Inc. is the nation’s largest combined fabric and craft retailer with sales of almost $2.0 billion. Jo-Ann employs over 21,000 team members in 750+ stores, located in 48 states.

Prior to coming to work for Jo-Ann Stores, he spent the previous 17 years working for Wal-Mart Stores in Bentonville, Arkansas. His last position there focused on the design of all benefit plans for their national and international operations. Tom holds an accounting degree from Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri and a Master’s degree in Leadership and Business Ethics from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. He has previously taught at The University of Akron in the MBA program.

Tom is an active board member of Shelter Care, Inc. Shelter Care provides short and long term shelter for troubled youth and pregnant teens in the greater Akron area. He has also been a board member of the Health Action Council of Ohio and the Chair of the Fiduciary Board of Riverwood Community Chapel.

In this performance, the University of Akron Dance Company welcomes alumna Amy Miller from GroundWorks Dance Theater. Miller is this year's recipient of Outstanding Artist in Dance by the Akron Area Arts Alliance. UADC will perform a world premiere and sister piece to Miller's popular work Valence. The UADC dance concert also features works by new UA faculty member Robin Prichard, and esteemed faculty Tom Smith and Cydney Spohn. The concert includes entertaining and thought provoking modern dance and contemporary ballet.

Child's Play Fundrasier

Child's Play Charity is a gamer's organization started by Penny Arcade. They help collect toy and video game donations for local children's hospitals, so that children who are forced to spend time in hospitals have something to take their mind off of their illness. Nationwide, Child's Play has raised over $5 million in donations.

This year, the University of Akron student chapter of the ACM will be hosting a LAN party to benefit Child's Play and Akron Children's Hospital. There will be free food, PC, console and tabletop gaming, a guitar hero tournament, and much more!

Admission to the fun is only $20 in advance, or $25 at the door. We will also accept the equivalent in new or used toys or video games. Advance tickets will be available at tables in the student union this week and next. Pre-registration is also available at our website.

This event is open to everyone, including students, non-students, hardcore gamers, casual gamers, and n00bs. So please invite all of your friends!

Remember, all proceeds will go toward the purchase of new video games and other toys for children at Akron Children's Hospital!

This annual, international forum is endorsed by the State Council of the People's Republic of China and co-hosted by Peking University, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education, and the Korean Foundation for Advanced Studies. Dr. Proenza will participate in a panel discussing "Higher Education under Financial Crisis: Strategies and Development." In addition to Cornell University President David Skorton and Marshall Smith, who is Senior Counselor to the U.S. Secretary of Education, other forum participants include higher-education leaders from the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Pakistan, Mongolia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Korea and China.

Financial Panel 2009

The Financial Panel 2009 sponsored by the Financial Management Association will be held in the Student Union Theatre.

Panel participants will be Tony Decello - Firm Director of Deloitte & Touche LLP Private Client Advisors, Vern Patterson - Director of Investor Relations at Key Bank, Diana Sorrell - PHR and Sr. Recruiter for Westfield Insurance, and Jan Thomas - CEO of PSE Credit Union, Inc. The panel members will speak about their jobs and give a short bio, followed by a questions and answer session with the audience. We have informed the panel members to be prepared to focus on the economic situation and how to work under the pressures of a layoff and how to differentiate yourself from more experienced people fighting for the same job. This is a great opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge of finance and to network with professionals.

It would be very beneficial for all majors to attend. Following the presentations there will be a question and answer session as well as a chance to speak with the panel members one on one. Professional attire is recommended.

CBA Summer-In-Ghana Program Information Session

Would you be interested in doing a study abroad in summer 2010? How about doing your program in the tropical country of Ghana in West Africa during Summer I in 2010? Come to an informational meeting in CBA 126.

The “Summer in Ghana Program” was created to give University of Akron students the opportunity to travel to, and study in Ghana during the summer. Students participating in the program are able to register for, and receive academic credit for selected University of Akron (UA) classes. Students may register for such UA classes as “International Business Practices”, “World Civilizations – Africa”, and “Honors Colloquium”.
