According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), the Class of 2012 should face positive opportunities in the employment market. Employers are proceeding to hire graduates with caution, however, employers responding to the Job Outlook 2012 survey plan to hire 9.5 percent more new graduates in 2011-12 than they did in 2010-11. The survey indicated that among employers with plans to increase hiring, more than half indicated that either their companies have more business or they are experiencing company growth. Another 20 percent cited the need to replace retiring workers, their aging work force, and increasing attrition rates.
In addition, employers still look for evidence of outstanding skills and qualities of candidates on their resumes. Evidence of teamwork, leadership, and written communication skills topped the list, and were cited by more than three-quarters of survey respondents. It was also documented that employers are looking for team players. From survey respondents, employers cited that teamwork skills are the most sought-after skills on a student’s resume, and that also rated team work as that of highest importance on the overall list of skills/qualities.
