The University of Akron offers many opportunities and places to travel to, but I decided to study in South Korea because it was the most financially feasible program. I also liked the idea of traveling to the Asian region because it was completely outside my comfort zone.
My study abroad experience in South Korea taught me a lot. Aside from the subjects that I studied and a little of the Korean language, I gained an understanding of their culture, beliefs, and way of life. I got a whole different perspective on a collectivist lifestyle which is very different from my own individualistic perception.
I believe my study abroad experience has helped me to be more well-rounded and more open and understanding of different cultures and ways of life.
The most memorable part of my study abroad experience was the friends that I made. Whether American or Korean, they definitely made my study abroad experience everything it was. The last weekend before we left, a large group of us rented a cabin on a river. That was by far one of the most memorable moments of my trip.
I did a lot of fun and interesting things with the friend that I made in South Korea. We experienced Club Night is Seoul, stayed at spa hostels, bungee jumped, visited both coasts, hiked through caves, traveled to Japan and Jeju, climbed the highest volcano, attended World DJ Festival in Seoul, and made funny videos. It was all fun.
My study abroad experience (in South Korea) surpassed my expectations in every way possible. I don't think I knew what to expect going into it, but there is not one negative thing I can say. I would do it again in a heartbeat. Everyone should get to experience something that is so great!
