Not everyone is looking to obtain a master’s or bachelor's degree. Some people simply want to refresh or broaden their skills so that they can contribute more at work or be in a stronger position for a new job.
Here at the College of Business Administration, we offer certificate programs at the graduate and undergraduate level. For students who earn a certificate, a statement will be placed on their permanent record indicating the area of concentration.
We offer these undergraduate and post-baccalaureate certificate programs:
To earn a certificate, the student must maintain a 2.0 GPA in the certificate area of study. A certificate may be designated at any time during the student’s career up to and including the time the degree clearance is processed. With the exception of internships, courses for a certificate may not be taken credit/non-credit. All credits must be earned. The student must earn at least nine credits at The University of Akron. Courses required for a certificate may carry prerequisites, which must be honored before the student may enroll.
The certificate indicating the area of concentration will be awarded when the student completes requirements for a degree, unless the program specifies that it is free-standing and does not require participation in a degree program.
* To be granted this certificate, the student must complete at least 6 credits in addition to the requirements for any other major, minor, or certificate that has been earned.
Applying for a certificate starts with an admissions application apply for admission.
Graduate certificate programs are ideal for those applicants already holding a Master’s degree who are seeking additional training in specialized areas of study to add to their portfolio of skills as well as current Master’s degree students. The Master’s degree may be in areas of study outside of business.
Graduate certificate programs are made up of specific sets of courses which cannot be waived. Students enrolled in certificate programs are ineligible for Graduate Assistantship awards. International students may not enroll in certificate programs unless they are also admitted to a degree granting program and must complete both programs at the same time.
We offer the following graduate certificate programs:
Graduate certificate programs are fixed sets of courses. There are no waivers of any courses. And since these programs are not degree-seeking programs of study, students enrolled in them are ineligible for financial aid. Further, international students may not enroll in them to maintain their F-1 visa status.
The certificate indicating the area of concentration will be awarded when the student completes requirements for a degree, unless the program specifies that it is free-standing and does not require participation in a degree program.
Students who are admitted to a certificate program after being admitted to the MBA or MSM programs must take 9 additional credits not used for the MBA or MSM degree program. All International students must apply for certificate programs soon after completing foundation courses. Certificate programs are not recognized by INS as acceptable programs for admission and so must be completed concurrently with the degree program. They cannot be added to extend your stay in the US. Saudi scholarship students interested in pursuing a certificate program in addition to the MBA or MSM degrees must complete all foundation level courses prior to applying for the certificate and must have a letter from the Saudi Cultural Mission or employer approving the addition of the certificate program.
To enter a program, students must hold a bachelor’s degree, but they do not have to take the GMAT, submit letters of reference, a statement of purpose or a resume.
Applying is done through the normal graduate school application. Students will be able to specify on the form that the application is for a certificate program. Should the student later wish to earn a graduate degree, the normal application process must be completed.
