The particular 3 courses of the concentration will be selected by the Director of Graduate Programs based upon the interests of members of the Saturday MBA Cohort. All students in the cohort will take the same concentration courses.

MBA Action Learning

Approved courses from each department/concentration consisting of action-based activities may fulfill this one course program requirement. Other alternatives would include internships (excluding GATEWAY internship); study abroad; independent studies of various natures which are “live” projects, etc. A student may fulfill this program requirement with a course taken in fulfillment of concentration requirements that is listed as an approved “MBA Action Learning” course. OR A student may fulfill this program requirement by taking an approved course which is outside their concentration.

  • Total courses: 15 – 18 or 19
  • Credits: 36 or 39 minimum - 48 or 51 maximum

If all Gateway courses are waived and a student fulfills the action-learning MBA requirement with a concentration course from a 9 credit concentration the program is 36 credits.

Action-based learning alternatives (not limited to this list):

  • Actual business problem project with direct contact with representatives of the business (individual or team). This could constitute the entire course or could be a major (1/3 or more or the course requirements) course assignment.
  • “Live case” – students work on a case about a real firm and have contact with representatives of the firm; make a presentation to those representatives.
  • Students work on projects (individual or team) where they are applying a course concept within an actual firm.
  • Students do survey research involving business practitioners.
  • Students conduct primary or field research.
  • Students interact in some way in real-time within the real business environment.
  • Students interview practicing managers as part of a project.
  • Students use real data bases, make recommendations about real business problems.

6700:696 Special Topics in Professional Development: Collaboration and Influencing

This course will include the MBA Professional Development Orientation focusing on becoming self-aware of individual leadership and collaboration competencies and acquiring knowledge about leading and collaboration processes and models.

6700:696 Special Topics in Professional Development: Professional Integrity and Social Responsibility

In this course students will develop their self-awareness of their competencies and personal values relative to professional integrity and become knowledgeable of multiple perspectives of the responsibilities of business to society. The implications of diversity of values and perspectives, relative to sustainable organization performance, will be explored.

6700: 696 Special Topics in Professional Development: Negotiation and Collaboration

In this course students will examine negotiation principles and practices to develop their negotiation competencies with emphasis on negotiating career advancement agreements.

NOTE: These courses will be taught with heavy emphasis on self-assessment; experiential exercises; casework; presentations; and team work.
