Welcome to the Office of Undergraduate Programs

Academic Advising is a partnership between students and the University. We are eager to help you achieve your goals and support you throughout your academic journey. Whether you are mapping out a long term schedule, considering a study abroad or internship or need tutoring information, our staff is available to assist.

Walk-in hours for the office will begin June 10th, with the start of the summer semester. If you need to meet with an advisor, please schedule an appointment using the "Schedule Your Appointment Now" link.

Summer office hours begin May 13th, the office will be open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

General Info FAQs

Appointment & Walk-in Hours

  • Our office is located in the CBA building, room 260. Advisors are available through scheduled appointments or during walk-in hours. To schedule an appointment, please call our office at 330-972-7042 or stop by. You can also contact your assigned advisor (found in My Akron) through your UA email.
  • Summer 2013 regular office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Walk-in hours for summer semester begin Monday, June 10th.
  • Walk-in appointments take approximately 5-10 minutes and are designed for quick questions regarding: major/minor declaration, standards of academic progress for financial aid, late graduation applications, course pre-requisites, add/drop, and internship eligibility.

Dropping & Adding Courses

Drop/Withdrawal Policy

  • The University of Akron has adopted a new drop/withdrawal policy, effective fall 2011.
  • Students are now able to drop and/or withdraw from a course electronically through My Akron. The last day to withdraw from a course during the fall or spring, is the seventh week of classes.
  • Additional details regarding this new policy are available in the following document.

Adding Courses

  • Students have the ability to add classes by using My Akron through the first week of classes. After this point in the semester, students will need to obtain signatures from the instructor of the course, their advisor, and the Dean.
  • The deadline for adding courses is the 14th day of the semester for three credit hour courses. Late start course dates vary per semester. It is the students’ responsibility to be aware of these deadlines.

Inter College Transfer (ICT Process)

Students interested in pursuing one of the majors in the CBA and are admitted to University College or one of the other degree granting colleges on the UA campus will need to apply to the College by completing an Inter College Transfer (ICT) application.

To be eligible to transfer into the CBA, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • 2.5 GPA overall
  • 2.0 GPA in all business and economics course
  • 2.0 GPA in all major courses
  • Complete 30 credits including: 6200:201 Accounting Principles I, 3450:145 College Algebra (or higher level math), 3250:200 Microeconomics and one behavioral science course (3230:150 Human Cultures, 3750:100 Intro. to Psychology or 3850:100 Intro. to Sociology).
    • *Applicants will be notified via letter once the application has been reviewed.

Dean’s List

Requirements for Dean’s List recognition are as follows:

Full Time Students

  • A grade point average of 3.25 or better, earned in the previous term
  • All course enrollments are for a letter grade of A through F
  • No Incomplete or In Progress grade
  • Minimum of 12 credit hours completed during the previous term

Part Time Students

  • A grade point average of 3.25 or better, earned in the previous term
  • All course enrollments are for a letter grade of A through F
  • No Incomplete or In Progress grade
  • Minimum of 6 credit hours completed during the previous term

Certificates

Certificates can be another way students supplement their current major. To declare a certificate, students can meet with a CBA advisor during walk-in hours. Certificates can be completed along with a baccalaureate degree or after completion of the baccalaureate degree.

Once all coursework is completed for the Certificate, the Registrar’s Office will be notified and a certificate will be mailed.

Curriculum Change Summaries

Each year the CBA reviews the undergraduate curriculum to make sure coursework is meeting the assessment standards set by the College. Students will be notified of any significant changes to the curriculum. This information will be made available below.

Graduation Requirements

To receive a baccalaureate degree from the CBA, students must satisfy the requirements for acceptance into the College and fulfill the following requirements: General Education courses, additional business courses, CBA Core, and all Major course requirements. In addition, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Earn at least 15 credits within the College after CBA admission is granted.
  • At least 50 percent of the business credit hours required for a business degree must be earned in the CBA, including a minimum 14 credits in the student's major program.
  • Earn a total of 128 credits. Accounting majors must earn 150 credits if they plan to sit for the CPA. Additionally, students must earn 160 credits to obtain a double degree.
  • Students must meet the following GPA requirements for graduation:
    • 2.3 overall GPA
    • 2.0 business and economics GPA
    • 2.0 GPA in all major courses

Transfer/Transient Credit

Transfer Credits

Transfer credits are credits that students take at another institution prior to admission to UA. The University accepts transfer credits from accredited colleges and universities. Students interested in learning more about the transfer process should contact the UA Transfer Student Services Center at 330-972-7009.

Evaluation of Transfer Credits:

Business courses will be evaluated by the CBA for transfer equivalency. Criteria used to determine transfer equivalencies include:

  • Business courses with an earned grade of “C” or better;
  • Application to the CBA core and major course work;
  • Institution type and accreditation level;
  • Articulation level of TAG courses through the state of Ohio.

Process for Evaluation of Transfer Work:

Transfer credits count as credits completed; however, the earned grade is not calculated into the UA GPA. Transfer grades and GPA are considered in determining admission to the CBA.

All general education course work is evaluated through the UA Transfer Student Services Center.

To have business transfer courses evaluated, complete the Transfer Course Review Request.

Transfer Residency Requirements:

  • A minimum of 32 total credits must be earned at UA for a baccalaureate degree.
  • At least 50% of the business core and major coursework must be earned at UA, including a minimum 14 credits in the student's major.

Transient Credits

Transient credits are credits that UA students take at another, pre approved, institution. UA students need permission in advance of taking transient coursework.

Transient Guidelines:

  • Students are allowed to complete 18 total credits of transient coursework.
  • The CBA will not approve any online classes.
  • Out of state transient requests must include course syllabi with the transient request form.
  • Business courses taken through transient permission must earn a grade of “C” or better.
  • Only Ohio business tag courses at the 200 level, will be approved.
  • Permission for General Education courses need to be approved by the University College Dean’s Office (Simmons Hall Room 302). Permission for Honors Distribution courses, need to be approved by the Honors College.

Transient Permission Process:

  • Students should meet with their advisor to complete a Transient Permission Form.
  • Completed forms need to be turned in to the CBA Undergraduate Advising Office for final approval. Allow at least two weeks for final approval.
  • Once courses are completed, an official transcript must be sent to UA for posting in DARS.

Transient Residency Requirements:

  • A minimum of 32 total credits must be earned at UA for a baccalaureate degree.
  • Transient work is not permitted in the student’s last 32 credits.
  • At least 15 credits of business coursework must be earned after admission into the CBA
  • At least 50% of the business core and major coursework must be earned at UA, including a minimum 14 credits in the student's major program.

Study Abroad

Traditional Study Abroad

  • Studying abroad is an excellent way to develop academic and professional skills that will enable a student to gain a competitive edge in today's job market. The Office of the International Programs is the main resources for programs and can provide information on studying for a summer, semester, or year abroad. Studying abroad offers direct UA credit. However, grades from international institutions are not calculated in a student's GPA.

Study Abroad Requirements:

  • Students should begin applying for study abroad locations one year before the tentative semester abroad. Once a student is accepted, he or she should meet with an advisor to review and draft a list of courses to take during the semester abroad and to complete the Transient Permission Form. All courses must be approved prior to the study abroad experience.
  • A minimum of 32 total credits must be earned at UA for a baccalaureate degree.
  • At least 15 credits of business coursework must be earned after admission into the CBA.
  • At least 50% of the business core and major coursework must be earned at UA, including a minimum 14 credits in the student's major program.
  • For business classes, a grade of “C” or better is required in order to transfer credits.

CBA Summer Programs

The CBA invites all students to consider a summer abroad experience. The advantages to be gained by living in another country for a short time will greatly benefit students, both personally and professionally, as they gain a broader perspective on today’s global business environment.

Internships

Steps to the Internship Process

1) Meet with your academic advisor in the CBA to begin the internship process.

2) Review the academic eligibility criteria with your advisor and receive an Internship Pre-Approval Form.

3) Visit the Career Center, in Simmons 201, to start the search for an internship. The Career Center can assist you with your resume, interviewing, and a password for the Roolink system.

4) Contact Nichole Grambo, CBA Internship Coordinator, at interns.cba@uakron.edu for help finding an internship.

Once an internship offer is received:

  • Obtain an offer letter from the company in which you will intern.
  • Schedule a meeting to discuss the offer and to obtain an Enrollment Form. Bring the offer letter to this meeting.
  • Meet with the department chair to finalize approval and to submit the following forms. (All four forms must be submitted together.)
    • Pre-Approval Form
    • Acceptance Form
    • Offer Letter
    • Enrollment Form

If the internship is approved, the department chair will sign the Enrollment form.

Once the enrollment form is signed, all forms need to be returned to the student's CBA advisor. At this point, the advisor will enroll the student in the internship course.

Important Information

There are several benefits of completing an internship. Through participating in an internship, students can:

  • Enhance their resumes with relevant work experience.
  • Learn more about their chosen field
  • Learn to apply academic learning to real-world, hand-on situations
  • Build professional contacts for future jobs. The networking opportunities associated with internships are priceless.
  • Earn money and college credit simultaneously. Hourly wages for CBA interns range from $10 to $19 per hour.

65% of students that intern are offered full time employment from the company at which they interned.

The Internship Process

In order to begin the internship process, a student should first meet with his or her assigned academic advisor to review the academic eligibility requirements for his or her major.

**Please note, internship credit will not be approved for prior work experiences, work experiences that are not related to the students major or for internships completed in a prior semester.
