Prospective Student Information

How do I apply for admissions to The College of Business Administration?
You will need to apply which can be done on-line by going to www.uakron.edu/admissions. You will be required to obtain an official transcript from your high school. If you have taken courses as a Post-Secondary Option Student (PSO) you will need to also obtain transcripts from the College that you attended as a PSO student.

You will need to complete all information that is sent pertaining to orientation. You will pick an orientation date/appointment (electronically). Once you are registered for an orientation date you will be on your way to becoming a University of Akron Student.

I have Advanced Placement Credit from High School, how do I get this posted to my academic record?
You will need to get official scores sent to The University of Akron. You will be sent a letter from The University of Akron, outlining how to process your request for Advanced Placement Credits. If you would like to know what score is required, you can go to the Undergraduate Bulletin. Currently you will need to pay $5.00 per credit hour for the course in which you qualify for Advanced Placement.

Are transfer credits accepted?
Transfer credits are accepted at The University of Akron from regionally accredited colleges and universities. Where credits are applied is based upon general education requirements and major requirements. General Education evaluations are determined by University College. If you have questions concerning transfer courses for your general education requirements, please contact Karen Dickerson, Director of Transfer Student Services Center kdicker@uakron.edu. Courses for your major in business are determined by the College of Business. If you want to explore where your credits might apply go to www.transfer.org and click Get Started button. You can determine how your classes will transfer by using this guide (most schools in Ohio are represented).

Students that would like transfer credit for business courses taken at another institution must have received a grade of “C” grade or higher in order for courses to be accepted. Credits transferred into The University of Akron do not carry a grade. They simply count as credits completed. Transfer grades are considered in determining admission to the College of Business Administration.

I have not attended The University of Akron for several years what should I do?
If you attended another University, you need to reapply as a transfer student (submit another application) but you do not need to pay another application fee. You will need to get official transcripts from all schools attended and have them sent to The University of Akron. For additional information regarding admissions please go to www.uakron.edu/admissions.

If you have not attended another school, you must complete a matriculation form which can be completed at https://zipline.uakron.edu. Go to reactivate your student record. Once your record is reactivated, find out which major and department your Academic Record is housed and call and schedule an appointment. If you were a business major, we may need to retrieve your file from archives, so we will need you to schedule an appointment but provide information on when you last attended the University of Akron. You may want to obtain a transcript and bring with you to the advising appointment. Please call (330) 972-7042 for an appointment.

I am an international student. Can I transfer in my previous courses?
Transfer credits are accepted at The University of Akron from accredited schools (this includes International Schools, Colleges, and Universities. In evaluating international courses, you may be required to submit a syllabus in order for credits to transfer to meet requirements especially in business. Students must obtain a “C” grade or higher in order for courses to transfer to meet business requirements. Credits transferred into The University of Akron do not carry a grade. They simply count as credits completed. Transfer grades are considered in determining admissibility to the College of Business Administration.

Do I need an appointment to see an Adviser?
Yes, The CBA Undergraduate Programs Office recommends that students make an appointment by calling (330) 972-7042. Appointments are scheduled for ½ hour sessions.

Why would I schedule an appointment?
Appointments are suggested for issues surrounding course scheduling, change major or declare major and/or minors, graduation clearance, transfer credit evaluation, transient permission, study abroad advising, removing holds, general questions that may require longer then 5 – 10 minutes.

Can I “Walk in” to see an adviser?
Walk-in appointments are brief 5 – 10 minutes. Walk-in issues are normally surrounded by adding/dropping courses, checking pre-requisites, getting enrolled in honor’s project, internship or co-op, change major from Business to another College (within The University of Akron). You may want to call the CBA UG Programs Office at (330) 972-7042 for walk-in times.

When do I register for classes?
Information on registration dates can be found in ZipLine. If you are not familiar with ZipLine – follow these steps:

  1. Sign into https://zipline.uakron.edu
  2. Click on the “Student” tab at the top.
  3. Click on “Enrollment Services Dates.” You typically will enroll at 6:00 pm on the date posted.
  4. You can also find your enrollment date in the Student Center area in your Zipline Account.

Will the CBA UG Programs Office schedule classes for me over the telephone?
This office will not register students over the telephone. Students that may be having difficulties registering for courses, due to transfer, transient, or you are a Post-Bacc. student, can e-mail ug.cba@uakron.edu, include your student ID# , course number, time and date of class and semester, and the error message you are receiving. The advisors will get back in touch with you via e-mail to inform you of your registration or if there was a problem. Or you can schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor by calling (330) 972-7042.

I have a Satisfactory Progress form from the Scholarships and Financial Aid Office that needs to be completed by my advisor. What should I do?
You will need to make an appointment to see an adviser pertaining to the form. It will take 2 – 3 business days for completion. You can call (330) 972-7042 to set up an appointment to get the form completed. Once the form is completed, you will be notified by e-mail or telephone call to come in and pick up the completed form.

I am trying to register for a course, but Zipline says I have not met a prerequisite, but I have.
Sometimes there is a “computer glitch” that prevents students from registering for classes. This sometimes happens to transfer students or business majors that have taken pre-requisites in Summit College or at other Universities or their coursework is “old” from many years ago. You will need to e-mail ug.cba@uakron.edu, include your student ID# and list the error message you are receiving. The advisers will get back in touch with you via e-mail to inform you of your registration or if there was a problem.

Can the CBA UG Programs Office add me into a class that is full?
We can only add students into classes that still have spaces available. If you want to get into a class that is full, you will need to keep checking ZipLine for vacancies. Once the semester starts and you are still trying to add a course, you will need an “add” form. These forms are located in ZipLine or you can stop by the CBA UG Programs Office to pick a form up. Please keep in mind that all pre-requisites must be met in order to be added unless approved to override.

Can I take a course and improve my grade?
Yes. You can retake a class up to two times as long as you received a “C-“ or below grade. In order to take it a third time you will need the permission of the Director of Undergraduate Programs in Business. Please keep in mind that when you retake a course the grade that you receive is what will be calculated into your grade point average (higher or lower grade received). In addition, all grades taken at The University of Akron will be considered when determining Honor’s Graduation. It is best to make an appointment to talk with an adviser to determine if it is feasible to repeat a course.

Why does the add/drop form have signatures?
An instructor’s signature and an adviser’s signature are required for adding or dropping courses after certain deadlines (see ZipLine). If you are in the CBA your adviser is located in Room 260. It is important to get the instructor signature first before the adviser. If a Dean’s signature is required, you need to bring the form to the CBA UG Programs Office, Room 260, the Director of Undergraduate Programs in Business serves as the Dean’s Designee for Scheduling/Registrations issues. Once you have obtained all signatures the form must be taken to the Registrar’s Office located in Simmons Hall. Please be careful of deadline dates. If the instruct signs the form after the stated deadline, the CBA UG Programs Office will not be able to sign.

I took the Compass Math Placement Tests and placed into Calculus. Do I have to take College Algebra?
No, if you placed into Calculus (3450: 210 or 215), you can register for Calculus. Once you pass Calculus with a “C” grade or higher, you can obtain by-pass credit for College Algebra (3450:145). Once you pass this course, you will need to schedule an appointment in the CBA UG Programs Office to complete the necessary paperwork to obtain credit. Currently you will need to pay $5.00 per credit hour for the course ($20 per course). The form is taken to Simmons Hall for processing.

You must first past English Composition II (3300:112) with a “C” grade or higher. Once you pass this course, you will need to schedule an appointment in the CBA Advising Office to complete the necessary paperwork to obtain credit. What is an Entry Appointment?
This is your Orientation to the College of Business Administration. At this session you will be provided with your Degree Requirements Form (DRF), Degree Audit and Reporting System (DARS), information pertaining to graduation, internships/co-ops, etc. are explained during this session. This appointment is required of all students. Failure to attend will result in a hold being placed on your academic record.

What is the Degree Requirements Form (DRF)?
The DRF is a form that is used in the CBA UG Programs Office to track your progress toward graduation. This form is major specific and outlines all requirements, pre-requisites, and electives needed in order to obtain your degree in business. Sometimes students refer to this as their “contract.”

What is DARS?
The Degree Audit Reporting system (“DARS”) is a real-time evaluation of your individual degree progress. It shows your college transcript, what classes you have taken, and the classes you have left to take. It is very helpful to use while scheduling and to track your progress towards graduation. This is an electronic copy of your Degree Requirements Form.

What GPA is required for graduation?
For students who ENTERED AND ENROLLED at The University of Akron and were admitted to the CBA after Fall 2005, they must achieve an overall GPA of 2.3, Business and Economics grade point average of a 2.0, and major grade point average of a 2.0. **Finance majors must also obtain a 2.0 grade point average in Advanced Corporate Finance (6400:379), Investments (6400:343), and Financial Markets and Institutions (6400:338).

What happens if I do not meet the grade point averages to graduate?
You need to see an adviser immediately to determine what courses you need to repeat in order for your grade point averages to improve in order to graduate. Contact the CBA UG Programs Office at (330) 972-7042 and schedule an appointment.

My grade point averages are below a 2.0. What happens?
You will be placed on probation or dismissed. If placed on probation your academic record will have a “hold” and you will be required to see an adviser. If you are dismissed you will not be allowed to attend courses for at least one semester. You do have an opportunity to appeal, and will be asked to provide a rationale as to why you are appealing the decision.

OR you can run your DARS report and your grade point averages will be located in DARS. P lease keep in mind that your graduation Grade Point Average is determined by when you were admitted and enrolled to the College of Business Administration (Before 2005 - (2.0 overall; after 2005 - 2.3 overall; business and economics 2.0, and major 2.0.

What is the residency requirement in order to graduate?
In order to be granted a degree, you must complete at least 15 business courses in your major, 50% of your business courses have to be taken at The University of Akron in the College of Business Administration and your last 32 credits have to be at The University of Akron?

Do I have to take 6400:200 the new requirement for finance majors?
All finance majors entering the College of Business after Summer 2007 must take this course. If you entered the College of Business prior to the Summer 2007, you may be able to use this course as an elective. Consult with a CBA Adviser or e-mail ug.cba@uakron.edu regarding questions.

How do I apply to transfer into the College of Business?
In order to transfer into the College of Business Administration (CBA), you need to have the following requirements completed:

  • Earn 40 college credits
  • Complete a behavioral since course (Psychology 3750:100, Sociology 3850:100, Human Cultures 3230:150)
  • Complete College Algebra (3450:150)
  • Complete Principles of Microeconomics (3250:200)
  • Complete Accounting I (6200:201)
  • Maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher (for students who attended and enrolled at The University of Akron after Fall 2005)
  • Maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher in business and economics courses
  • Earn at least an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher in any business major courses taken at the time of transfer into the CBA, unless otherwise specified by the CBA department.
When all of these criteria are completed, the student should go to his or her current advisor and initiate an Inter-College Transfer (ICT). You may need to make an appointment with your advisor in order to process this paperwork. After the initial paperwork is completed, a review of your academic file will take place and then sent to the CBA. Please allow two to 3 weeks for processing.

What is Business Policy and when do I take it?
Business Policy is a course taken in your last year (preferably last semester) of College and cannot be taken concurrently with any of your Business Core classes except Quantitative Business Analysis II, you must also be admitted into the College of Business Administration and have at least 97 credits completed. You are not allowed to take pre-requisites concurrently with Business Policy.

What happens if I withdraw from a class?
Your transcript will show a “WD” if you withdraw depending on when you withdraw from the class. The CBA UG Programs Office will not accept late withdrawals (after deadline), except for extremely extenuating circumstances. Documentation will be necessary.

How do I change my major?
You must complete a change of major form in the CBA Undergraduate Programs Office in Business. You will need to schedule an appointment (330) 972-7042. If you are planning to change your major from business, please call and set an appointment to complete an inter-College Transfer (“ICT”) form.

I want to do a double major? What do I need to do?
If the major resides in the College of Business, you will need to set up an appointment to speak with an adviser (330) 972-7042. If the major resides in another college you will need to contact that other college (within the University) and determine the requirements for that second major.

I want a double degree? What are the requirements?
You will need to complete at least 160 credits and the requirements for the second degree. For Marketing, Sales Management, E-Marketing Advertising, and International Business you must have 12 credits that do not apply to the first major in order to qualify for a double degree. I want to pursue a minor. What should I do?
If the minor resides in the College of Business, you will need to set up an appointment to speak with an advisor (330) 972-7042. If the minor resides in another college you will need to contact that other college (within the University) and determine the requirements for that minor. If you are interested in pursuing a minor in Business, please be aware that you must meet all pre-requisites for courses.

Transient Permission

Do I have to obtain permission to take courses at another institution?
YES. You must complete a transient permission form in order for courses to transfer back to The University of Akron. For general education requirements, you must obtain permission from University College (330) 972-7066 and you are only allowed 18 credits of transfer work from another institution. In addition, you must complete your last 32 credits at The University of Akron. It is recommended that you contact CBA advisor and schedule an appointment (330) 972-7042.

Can I temporarily study at another institution?
If you currently attend The University of Akron and wish to take classes at another institution for a semester or summer, you will be considered a “transient student” and you must provide rationale for taking classes at another institution and obtain prior approval before taking the courses (transient permission). In addition you should plan ahead because it may take several weeks for all signatures required to be obtained and final approval. Furthermore, for business courses you must obtain a “C” grade or higher. No upper division courses from two year colleges will be accepted for “major” requirements.

Education/Study Abroad

Can I study abroad?
Yes! The CBA participates in summer study abroad programs to places such as India, Greece, Korea and Ghana. The Office of the International Programs also has a list of programs and can provide information on studying for a semester or summer abroad. Information on Studying Abroad can be found on the CBA study abroad pages or from the Office of International Programs at http://www.uakron.edu/oip. You can also call to set up an appointment with a Study Abroad Adviser at OIP by calling 330-972-6394.

Are there special requirements for study abroad?
Yes. For business classes, a grade of “C” or better is required in order to transfer credits. All courses must be approved (transient permission) prior to the study abroad experience.

CBA students need to schedule an appointment with a CBA Advisor to get the transient permission paperwork completed and finalize study abroad courses (see transient permission ).

I missed the deadline what should I do?
You must see a CBA Adviser to obtain a permission to apply late. You will be required to pay a $100 late fee. The adviser will determine if you are eligible for graduation and have met all requirements prior to giving you permission.

You will need to contact commencement@uakron.edu and inform them to roll your graduation over to the next semester. This is to avoid the late fee being assessed.

What are the requirements for a co-op?
Be an undergraduate student who has been accepted into The College of Business Administration. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 2.5 for the College of Business, (each department may have additional requirements). In addition, complete Microeconomics (3250:200) and Accounting Concepts and Principles (6200:201).

Can I get credit for an internship?
Absolutely! Internship is worth 3 credits and can be used as an elective in most CBA majors. You must obtain permission from the Center for Career Management and the Department in which your major resides. In order to get registered for the internship course, you must bring the completed form (with signatures) to the CBA UG Programs Office (department consent only class).

Can I obtain retroactive credit for an internship?
You cannot obtain retroactive credit for an internship. Internships must be approved in advance.

Can I get internship credit for my current job because it is related to my major?
You cannot use your current position to fulfill the internship requirement.

What is the difference between an internship and a co-op?
Internships are typically one-time only assignments which are assigned academic credit (three credits) by an academic department. It is graded Credit/Non-Credit. A co-op is designed to provide students with exposure to career-related work. Work assignments are typically paid and consist of multiple assignments. Co-op experience is not worth any credits and is graded Credit/Non-Credit.

Can I take additional classes while I am interning?
All majors in the College of Business Administration can take classes the semester in which they intern, except accounting majors. They will have to obtain the approval of the department chair to take one class.

How many hours do I have to work when I do a co-op or internship?
Most students work a minimum 20 hours a week for a co-op or internship, except accounting majors. Accounting majors work 40 hours a week when performing an internship and 20 hours when performing a co-op.

I am an international student and want to do an internship what do I do?
You must first make an appointment with The Center for Career Management. They will go over eligibility requirements and the appropriate forms required to work. You can also go to and click on the immigration links and review information on Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and/or Optional Practical Training (OPT).
