Accounting Scholarships

Through the continuous support of firms and friends, the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy offers more than 40 scholarships annually to outstanding full-time undergraduate and graduate students, with the total amount exceeding $100,000. The school also supports a number of graduate assistantship stipends.

Unless otherwise noted, applications for the following scholarships are accepted until mid-February of each year. Current students are invited to complete the School of Accountancy Online Application Form, which is normally due by the end of the first week of February.

Scholarships for Freshmen

George W. Daverio Freshman Scholarship
Funded by the Daverio Endowment, this merit-based scholarship was established in 1994 to be awarded to an entering freshman majoring in accounting that graduated from an area high school. It can be renewed each year if the student maintains a 3.40 minimum grade point average and continues as an accounting major. Candidates may not apply for this scholarship. The School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee selects recipients from the list of incoming Accounting majors who have obtained admission to the CBA by the end of the first week of February.

The Donald S. Hills Endowed Scholarship Fund in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy
This scholarship was established in 1996 by Donald S. Hills, a 1947 graduate of the College of Business Administration with a degree in accounting. The scholarship is used to recruit incoming freshmen desiring to major in accounting. Mr. Hills served as vice president of Sara Lee Products and assistant secretary of Sara Lee Corporation and vice president of Lawsons Company. Candidates may not apply for this scholarship. The School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee selects recipients from the list of incoming Accounting majors who have obtained admission to the CBA by the end of the first week of February.

The Richard C. Rea, CPA, Scholarship Fund
The Richard C. Rea, CPA, Scholarship Fund was established by Rea & Associates Inc. to honor the founding partner on the firm's 50th anniversary. The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen intending to major in accounting. Recipients must be residents of a county in which Rea and Associates Inc. has an office. Candidates may not apply for this scholarship. The School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee selects recipients from the list of incoming Accounting majors who have obtained admission to the CBA by the end of the first week of February.

The Galen J. Roush Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1979 by the GAR Foundation as a lasting tribute to the late Galen J. Roush, Akron business and community leader whose organizational genius led to the founding of Roadway Express, Inc. The Roush Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance to deserving undergraduate finance or accounting majors.  It is awarded to both incoming freshmen and current students.  Incoming freshmen will be selected by the CBA Scholarship Committee from the list of students who have received direct admission to the college.   To be eligible for consideration, current students must have a grade point average of at least 3.6 and meet certain course completion requirements.  Eligible students will be notified by mail.

Advisory Board B.S./M.S. Accounting Scholarship
Funded by the Advisory Board of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, this scholarship is designed to attract, retain and support outstanding students who plan to become professional accountants and will pursue the School of Accountancy's Accelerated B.S./M.S. Accounting Program. Scholars will receive $1,000 each year for five years ($5,000 total). Awards will be made at the beginning of each academic year to outstanding entering freshmen that have selected accounting as a major and have preregistered for the Accelerated BS/MS Accounting Program. All scholars must satisfy the program's criteria to receive formal admission at the end of their junior year. Scholars must maintain a 3.0 or better GPA (accounting and overall) and be in good standing as an accounting major to continue eligibility. The board will offer three B.S./M.S. Accounting Scholarships.

Advisory Board CPA Review Scholarship
The Advisory Board will fund multiple online CPA review courses for outstanding accounting majors who are eligible to sit for the CPA examination. The board will award up to 10 CPA Review Scholarships at $300 each.

Advisory Board Graduate Accounting Scholarship
The Advisory Board provides funding to support stipends for two outstanding graduate assistants in the School of Accountancy to work on research and teaching projects for faculty. They will receive up to 15 credits of free tuition in addition to a $6,000 per academic year stipend funded by the board. All outstanding M.S. accounting students, including B.S./M.S. accounting students in the fifth year of the program, are eligible for these assistantships.

Advisory Board Undergraduate Scholarship
Funded by the Advisory Board of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, this scholarship is designed to retain and support outstanding accounting majors. Every year, five recipients are named as Accountancy Advisory Board Undergraduate Scholars and are awarded $2,000 each. These scholarships are presented at the school's spring awards banquet to outstanding junior and senior accounting undergraduates for the following academic year. Sophomore accounting majors who have completed 201 and 202 may also be eligible. The School of Accountancy's Scholarship Committee selects the scholars.

The Akron Tax Club Scholarship
The Akron Tax Club created this scholarship to benefit students enrolled in the Master of Taxation program at The University of Akron. The aim of the organization is to assist students pursuing an advanced degree in taxation and to expose students to the professional tax community in Akron. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full or part-time student in the Master of Tax program who is not eligible for tuition reimbursement from their employer. Faculty of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy selects scholarship recipients. To apply for this scholarship, download the School of Accountancy application form and submit it to Dr. Thomas Calderon, Chair, George W. Apple Growth Partners Scholarship in Honor of James Kausch
A scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding junior in accounting who has contributed to the University by participation in student organizations.

Apple Growth Partners Scholarship in Honor of Jay Heinick
A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding junior in accounting who has been employed while attending The University of Akron.

Apple Growth Partners Scholarship in Honor of L. Graf
A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding junior in accounting who has been employed while attending The University of Akron.

Becker-Conviser CPA Review Scholarship
Established in 1987 by Conviser-Duffy CPA Review, the purpose of the award is to recognize a senior in accounting. Four awards each year provide tuition for the Becker-Conviser CPA Review.

Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua Scholarship in Accounting
The Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua Scholarship in Accounting was created in December 2006. Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua are both proud graduates of The University of Akron; Frank received a B.A. in Mathematics in 1972 and an MBA in 1974, and Marie received a B.S. in Education and an M.S. in Elementary Education, both in 1974. Frank is president of Winer and Bevilacqua, an accounting firm in Akron, Ohio. Marie taught at an elementary school in Akron and later at St. Hilary School in Fairlawn. The Bevilacquas are strong believers in education and in giving back to their university and to their community. Recipients of the Frank P. and Marie Bevilacqua Scholarship in Accounting must be enrolled in the College of Business Administration, majoring in accounting. They must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.0 and be Ohio residents with demonstrated financial need.

Bober, Markey & Co. Alumni Scholarship
Employees of Bober, Markey & Co., who are alumni of The University of Akron, established this scholarship in 1987. An award is presented annually by the College of Business Administration to a full-time junior accounting student who carries 12 credits or more per semester and maintains an accumulated grade point average of 3.10 to 3.50 inclusive, and earns 100 percent of his or her college tuition through employment and/or financial assistance.

Bober, Markey & Co. Scholarship
Established in 1986 by Bober Markey & Co. of Akron, this scholarship is provided annually to an outstanding junior accounting major.

Briner-Catanzarite-Rakas Scholarship
Professors Briner, Catanzarite and Rakas established this annual $1,200 scholarship to encourage outstanding graduates of the School of Accountancy or Department of Finance to enroll full-time in The University of Akron School of Law. This scholarship is based on merit. Selection is made by the dean of the School of Law, based on recommendations submitted by the dean of the College of Business Administration.

The CBIZ/Mayer Hoffman McCann Scholarship in Accounting
This scholarship was established in 2004 by CBIZ/Mayer Hoffman McCann. It will be awarded to a third-year student to be used toward fourth-year tuition. The recipient must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 and must be earning 20 percent of their tuition.

Cohen & Company Scholarship Award
This scholarship was created to provide financial support for accounting majors and is awarded as funds are available. The scholarship recipient must be a junior accounting student who is enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours), maintains an accounting grade point average of at least 3.2, has financial need and has exhibited strength in the following areas: leadership, presentation skills, and overall accounting knowledge and understanding.

The Allen S. Crum Scholarship Fund
The Allen S. Crum Scholarship Fund is to support an Ohio native who is an accounting student in the College of Business Administration. The student should have a 3.30 or better grade point average. The Allen S. Crum Scholarship may be renewed for up to one additional year while the student recipient is in good academic standing and meets the described qualifications.

The Deloitte & Touche Alumni Scholarship
The Deloitte & Touche Alumni Scholarship was established by alumni of The University of Akron who are employed by Deloitte & Touche to reflect their strong belief in the value of higher education. Recipients are determined by a faculty committee, with preference given to students with a high grade point average and/or significant contributions to campus activities.

The Deloitte & Touche Scholarships
Scholarships are provided by the firm of Deloitte & Touche to outstanding juniors majoring in accounting as selected by the faculty of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy.

The Dennis Gordon Endowed Scholarship Fund
This endowed scholarship fund was established in 1981 by colleagues and friends of Dennis Gordon in honor of his retirement after a distinguished career spanning 35 years as a professor of accounting and 27 years as head of the School of Accountancy. Earnings from the endowed principal are used to award a scholarship to an outstanding junior majoring in accounting. Selection of the recipients is determined by merit and/or need by the Dennis Gordon Scholarship Fund Steering Committee without regard to race, creed, color, sex, or national origin.

The Don and Jeri Dixon Scholarship in Accounting
This scholarship was established by a gift from Mr. And Mrs. Donald A. Dixon Jr.  Don believes his accounting education at The University has contributed to his business success and for that reason he has established an endowed scholarship for the benefit of students in the CBA accounting program. This scholarship assistance is for nontraditional students in accounting, with a special request that recipients consider providing future personal scholarship support for this same purpose. Scholarship assistance is to be awarded to an outstanding student in the George A. Daverio School of Accountancy based on academic achievement and need. Selection of the recipient will be made by the department chair, with the assistance of the Office of Student Financial Aid. The donor requests that one annual recipient is selected to receive an award of up to the full cost of tuition, books and fees. If additional funds are available, they are to be awarded in the same manner until all the award funds are expended.

The Edith Mae Eckler Memorial Awards
Provided through the Edith Mae Eckler Trust, named in memory of the wife of the late John R. Eckler, first president of the First Central Trust Company (now known as the FirstMerit Corporation), awards are made to students majoring in finance and accounting. To apply for this scholarship, submit an undergraduate scholarship application each year to the Office of Student Financial Aid in Simmons Hall by April 1 for the following academic year.

William J. Ederer Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship, funded anonymously by a graduate of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy in honor of William J. Ederer, is awarded to a junior or senior accounting major with a demonstrated financial need.

Dr. Henry Efebera Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established in memory of Dr. Henry Efebera by the faculty of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. The fund provides one $2,000 scholarship annually to an undergraduate student majoring in accounting. The School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee selects recipients. Dr. Efebera was an assistant professor at The University of Akron from fall 1999 until his untimely death on March 25, 2002.

The Ernst & Young Endowed Accounting Leadership Scholarship
The Ernst & Young Endowed Leadership Scholarship was established in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy to assist deserving students pursuing a degree in accounting. Recipients must demonstrate financial need or hardship, maintain a 3.0 overall and a 3.25 GPA in accounting classes, demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities and exhibit leadership abilities.

The Thomas and Anita Gedelian Endowed Scholarship
Thomas and Anita Gedelian established this scholarship in 2006 to assist students pursuing degrees in Accounting and Finance. As alumni and benefactors of the CBA, Mr. and Mrs. Gedelian are active supporters of their alma mater. Establishing a scholarship to assist students in their academic pursuits is an example of the Gedelians' belief in the importance of higher education. In selecting recipients of the Gedelians' Endowed Scholarship, preference will be given to a junior or senior majoring in Accounting or Finance. Applicants must maintain a 3.4 grade point average and demonstrate employment that assists in contributing to college expenses, as well as participation in civic or community activities or organizations. Selection will be made by the dean of the College of Business Administration with input from the department chairs of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy and the Department of Finance.

George W. Daverio Junior Scholarship
Two scholarships are awarded to outstanding juniors in accounting. These scholarships are based on merit and are funded by the Daverio Endowment.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Accounting Scholarships
This scholarship fund was established by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company for the purpose of assisting junior accounting majors recommended by the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy faculty. The recipients must be U.S. citizens who desire to enter business or industry upon graduation and who require financial assistance.

The Jacob Gordon Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1975 by Jacob Gordon, certified public accountant. Tuition awards are presented to outstanding full-time juniors majoring in accounting. Students selected for the award are chosen on the basis of academic achievement and participation in campus activities.

The Dr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Horn Endowed Scholarship in Accounting
The Dr. and Mrs. Frederick E. Horn Endowed Scholarship in Accounting was established in 1996 in honor of Dr. Horn by his wife, Lenore Peterman-Horn. The scholarship will be awarded to a third-year student with an overall grade point average of 3.0 to be used toward fourth-year tuition.

The Williams H. Jenkins, C.P.A. and William L. Jenkins Endowed Fund
This fund provides annual support to the School of Accountancy for scholarships and an annual or multi-year competitive research and writing competition for students and faculty. The annual scholarships are made available to upper-class undergraduate students majoring in accounting and/or graduate students who are pursuing the fifth year of their pre-certification professional accountancy education. To be eligible for consideration, students must have demonstrated financial need, possess an overall 3.0 grade point average, as well as a 3.0 GPA in their accounting classes, and work while attending classes at the University. Law students are not eligible to receive scholarship support from this fund.

The Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. Scholarship
The Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. Scholarship was established in 2004 to provide financial support for students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. The scholarship is awarded annually to a junior or senior with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and financial need. The recipient must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) in the CBA and must meet the minimum coursework requirements of The University of Akron.

The KPMG Peat Marwick Main & Company Endowment Fund
This fund was established in 1985 with gifts from alumni employed by KPMG Marwick Main & Company and matching provisions from the KPMG Marwick Foundation. It provides earnings for scholarships to outstanding junior accounting majors.

The Jack and Lillian Katz Scholarship in Accounting
Established in 1984 by an alumna in honor of her parents, this scholarship is awarded annually to deserving junior or senior accounting majors enrolled in the College of Business Administration.

The James H. Kausch Memorial Scholarship in Accounting
Established in 1985 with funds from the estate of James H. Kausch, Class of 1957, a devoted alumnus highly respected in the accounting profession, this endowed fund provides earnings annually for an award to a deserving junior student majoring in accounting.

The Dr. Orville R. Keister Endowment Program
The Dr. Orville R. Keister Endowment Program was created to honor Dr. Orville R. Keister, retired distinguished professor of accounting and chair of the Daverio School of Accountancy, for his dedication to accounting students and his commitment to quality accounting education. This endowment provides funding for the Honors Student Scholarships, Program Enhancement and Faculty Awards. The Honors Scholarships are awarded annually to those junior or senior level accounting students who have outstanding academic records and who are active participants in one of the accounting student organizations at the University.

The Vincent P. Kopy Scholarship in Accounting
The Vincent P. Kopy Scholarship Fund was established in 2001 by former students of Vincent P. Kopy in sincere appreciation for his support and guidance, and as a tribute to the leadership and life skills he gave them. The scholarship recipient will be at the junior or senior level, enrolled in the College of Business Administration and pursuing a degree in accounting. First consideration will go to students who demonstrate strong interest and participation in student organizations, particularly Beta Alpha Psi, Accounting Association and Toastmasters. The Kopy Scholar should maintain a 3.0 grade point average, but GPA is of secondary importance to participation in student organizations. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Kopy Scholarship Committee in consultation with the director of student organizations and faculty advisers for the three student organizations.

The Daniel Joseph Maimone Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1978 by family and friends in loving tribute to the memory of Daniel Joseph Maimone, whose courage and determination in contending with leukemia was an inspiration to all who knew him. The fund provides three or four scholarship awards of $1,500 each for either accounting students or incoming freshmen majoring in accounting. Selection of recipients is based on merit, character, leadership attributes, academic interest and need. There is no restriction in regard to sex, creed, color, or national origin.

The Robert and Janet McMinn Scholarship
Robert McMinn ('72) and his wife Janet established this scholarship in 2004 to assist students pursuing degrees in Accounting in The University of Akron's College of Business Administration. As a partner in the accounting firm of Ciulla, Smith & Dale, Mr. McMinn is a tremendous advocate for University of Akron accounting students, offering numerous students valuable practical experience through internships with the firm. In selecting scholarship recipients, first preference will be given to junior or senior accounting majors who are graduates of the following high schools: Nordonia High School in Macedonia, OH; Lorain County Joint Vocational School in Oberlin, OH; and students from North Ridgeville High School in North Ridgeville, OH. Should no applicants who meet this requirement apply, preference will then go to junior or senior accounting majors with no regard to their high school alma mater. Selection will be made by the chair of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, with input from Mr. and Mrs. McMinn during their lifetimes.

The Meaden & Moore Ltd. Scholarship
The Meaden and Moore Scholarship, established in 2004, was created to financially support students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. The scholarship is awarded as funds are available. The scholarship recipient must be a junior or senior, enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) within the CBA, have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and financial need.

The James H. (’52) and Eva Miller Scholarship Fund
The James H. ('52) and Eva Miller Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 by loyal alumnus Jim Miller and his wife, Eva. The fund recognizes the Millers' deep belief in the value of higher education and their love of The University of Akron. The $500 scholarship is awarded to students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy with a 3.50 or above grade point average. Preference is given to Akron area students who are pursuing a career in managerial accounting.

The Susan and Peter Misner Accounting Scholarship
Established in 2007 by the Rev. Dr. Peter and Mrs. Susan (Rausch) Misner, this scholarship honors the memory Mrs. Misner’s father, Clarence G. Rausch, who had an outstanding career as a CPA. Although Mr. Rausch’s formal education ended at the high school level, through perseverance and determination, he went on to become a CPA and eventually led what was at the time a very significant accounting firm in Akron. The Misners hope that the scholarship will propel students to successful and gratifying careers in the field of accounting. Applicants must be sophomore, junior, or senior accounting students with a history of strong academic performance.

The Huber L. And Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship for Excellence in Accounting
The Huber L. and Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship for Excellence in Accounting was established in 1997 with a gift from Huber L. Mollenkopf and a matching gift from GenCorp. Mr. Mollenkopf, an honorary alumnus of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, has been recognized for his contributions to the integrity of the accounting field through his distinguished career at The General Tire and Rubber Company. This scholarship is for accounting majors who are active on campus, and who display high ethics and strong leadership skills.

The Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship Fund
The Virginia Mollenkopf Scholarship Fund was established in 1990 by Huber L. Mollenkopf in loving memory of his wife. The Mollenkopfs were members of Hilltoppers-Buchtelles and benefactors of the University. This endowment was created by a gift to The University of Akron Foundation to benefit junior or senior students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. Special consideration is given to students who have demonstrated financial need. Selection of award recipients is made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in cooperation with the dean of the College of Business Administration.

Frank Moran Memorial Scholarship (Plante & Moran, PLLC)
This scholarship is provided in honor of Frank Moran, one of the founders of Plante & Moran. The scholarship is awarded to a student who best exemplifies several key principles to which Mr. Moran subscribed, including balance in making decisions, self-motivation and leadership.

The Kimberly Morgan Accounting Scholarship for Excellence
This scholarship was established in 1997 by an anonymous friend of Kimberly Morgan in her honor. This fund supports outstanding students in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. The recipient shall be an accounting major, have high grades like those of an honor student (although the award is not restricted to honor students), be active on campus, have high ethics and strong leadership capabilities. The student should have the urge to build for his/her future performance of excellence.

The Henry “Hank” Nettling Endowed Scholarship in Accounting
This scholarship was created in 2002 through contributions from friends and relatives to honor Henry "Hank" Nettling, vice president emeritus for business and finance at the University. Hank graduated from the CBA with a B.S.B.A. in Accounting in 1959. The scholarship is awarded by the School of Accountancy, in collaboration with the Office of Student Financial Aid, to a junior enrolled full time (12 or more credit hours) in the School of Accountancy who maintains a 3.0 to 3.5 grade point average. The recipient will receive half of the award in the fall term and the remaining half in the spring term. The student must have financial need, yet not be eligible for grant assistance from state or federal need-based programs. The scholarship can be awarded through the recipient's senior year, if applicable.

The Parker Hannifin Corporation Accounting Scholarship
Established in 2007, this scholarship is awarded annually to an accounting major with an interest in working in industry. Criteria for the scholarship include: a GPA of at least 3.0 in accounting, business, and overall; excellent communication skills; active involvement in such student organizations as Beta Alpha Psi, the Accounting Association, or Institute of Management Accountants; and a reputation for being a team player with an excellent work ethic. Parker Hannifin, a $9 billion company, is the world's leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems, providing precision-engineered solutions for a wide variety of commercial, mobile, industrial and aerospace markets.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Scholarship
This scholarship is provided by alumni of The University of Akron to assist outstanding accounting majors with high GPAs, as selected by the faculty of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy.

The SS&G Scholarship In Accounting
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding junior accounting major with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher who is employed while in school and paying part of his or her tuition.

The Staci Ann Schoeppner Memorial Scholarship in Accounting
This scholarship was established in memory of Staci Ann Schoeppner '93 by her family. This renewable scholarship is awarded to a full-time accounting student who is an active member of the Accounting Association, works at least part time, is active in at least one other campus organization, maintains a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or better and demonstrates financial need.

The Skoda Minotti Scholarship
Established in 2009, the Skoda Minotti Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding sophomore student who is majoring in accounting and has maintained an accounting grade point average of at least 3.0, is active in an accounting student organization, and is involved in at least one significant community service activity.

The J.M. Smucker Company Accounting Scholarship
Established in 2007, this scholarship is awarded annually to an accounting major with an interest in working in industry. The preferred student will be a junior with at least a 3.0 grade point average in accounting, business and overall. The student will also be active in such student organizations as Beta Alpha Psi, Accounting Association, or Institute of Management Accountants.

The Julia Mikis Stell Scholarship in Accounting
The Julia Mikis Stell Scholarship Fund in Accounting was established in 1992 by Robert and Julia Stell in recognition of their belief in higher education and their desire to assist young people. The scholarship is to be awarded to an accounting student with a 3.00 or better grade point average. The scholarship is to be awarded for the duration of the student's academic program, provided he or she remains eligible.

The Grant Thornton Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to outstanding accounting majors who are interested in public accounting and who will be juniors at the start of the semester when the scholarships are disbursed.

Valmark Securities, Inc. Financial Planning Scholarship
Valmark Securities, Inc. created this scholarship for students majoring in Finance or Accounting in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide tuition and fees assistance for a deserving student who has a career goal of personal financial planning and intends to qualify for the CFP® mark. Each year, one $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student chosen by Finance Department faculty and Valmark representatives. The scholarship is awarded for one year only, and can be awarded only once to an individual student. The Valmark scholar must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Be a Finance or Accounting major with a declared intent to meet the educational requirements to sit for the Certified Financial Planner® Certification Examination.
  • Have completed eighty (80) credit hours as of the fall semester before application (second semester sophomore).
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.
  • Complete and submit the scholarship application along with an official copy of his/her transcript.
  • Complete an interview with Valmark Securities, Inc. and Finance Department faculty.
