CBA sophomore, Sarah Benjamin, is among nine UA student-athletes named to the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference All -Academic Team. Benjamin and four of the other 2010 honorees were also named to last year's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Academic All-American Team.
“Having a record number of nine athletes make the All-MAC Academic Team, in a conference this large, is quite an accomplishment,” stated head coach Newt Engle.
At the MAC Championship in March, Benjamin won individually for air rifle while the UA team as a whole won in smallbore, which was their first ever win over Navy.
Benjamin shot a career-high and school-record-tying 590 mark at the NCAA Qualifer earlier this season. The sophomore joined an elite group in Akron rifle history, becoming the second consecutive Zip to qualify for a trip to the NCAA's behind fellow sophomore Jenna Compton, and third overall, including Mark Beres (1979).
In the NCAA tournament held in Texas on March 13, Benjamin fired a score of 579 to finish 31st among 36 participants in the air rifle competition.
“The competition out there was absolutely insane and amazing”, she notes. “It was a great experience and now that I have one trip under my belt, I would love to go again and be able to do much better with the first time pressure gone.”
