The University of Akron will mark milestones as it confers a degree to its 150,000th graduate at the University’s 200th commencement on Saturday, Aug. 14 at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. Approximately 1,200 undergraduate and graduate degrees will be awarded at ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
University President Dr. Luis M. Proenza will deliver commencement addresses at both ceremonies. Two student speakers will represent the Summer Class of 2010: Emmit Green of Akron, a marketing student in the College of Business Administration, will speak at the morning ceremony. Jane Walter of Akron, an Honors College student majoring in French from the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, will be the afternoon speaker.
The Summer Class of 2010 consists of 1,186 candidates from 21 states and 27 countries. The degrees conferred will include 58 candidates for doctoral degrees; 421 for master’s degrees; 550 for bachelor’s degrees; and 171 for associate degrees.
The Saturday morning ceremony will recognize degree candidates from the College of Education, College of Business Administration, College of Creative and Professional Arts, College of Health Sciences and Human Services, and Wayne College. Saturday afternoon candidates will be from the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Nursing, College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, and Summit College.
"GradFest," a celebration for the graduates, their families and friends, will be held in the Goodrich Lobby in Thomas Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. GradFest features music, free snacks and beverages, and photo opportunities with UA's mascot, Zippy.
