UA Fall Commencement is Dec. 11


The University of Akron will confer more than 1,400 undergraduate and graduate degrees at its Fall 2010 Commencement ceremonies at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11.

University President Dr. Luis M. Proenza will deliver commencement addresses at both ceremonies. Ward J. “Tim” Timken Jr., chairman of The Timken Company, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters during the afternoon ceremony.

Two student speakers will represent the Fall Class of 2010: Rachel K. Karash, of North Jackson, Ohio, an honors student from the College of Business Administration, will speak at the morning ceremony. Brandon T. Sweitzer of Akron, a business and organizational communication/public relations major in the College of Creative and Professional Arts, will be the afternoon speaker.

With the December ceremonies, the University begins a new tradition. Graduating veterans will wear red, white and blue honor cords with their academic regalia, as UA recognizes their service to our country.

The Fall Class of 2010 consists of 1,489 candidates from 26 states and 25 countries. This group includes 38 candidates for doctoral degrees; 365 for master’s degrees; 884 for bachelor’s degrees; and 177 for associate degrees. The morning ceremony will recognize degree candidates from the College of Education, College of Business Administration, College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering; Summit College and Wayne College. Afternoon candidates will be from the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Nursing, College of Creative and Professional Arts; and College of Health Sciences and Human Services.

"GradFest," a celebration for the graduates, their families and friends, will be held in the Goodrich Lobby in E.J. Thomas Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. GradFest features music, free snacks and beverages, and photo opportunities with UA's mascot, Zippy. The Fall 2010 commencement boosts UA’s total number of alumni to 150,674.
