UA’s accounting program ranks high for its value to students

The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron has been ranked among the “Top 30 Affordable Master’s in Accounting Programs” in the United States, according to the Master’s in Accounting Degrees website. UA is the only Ohio college on the list.

“CPAs and other types of accountants have been ranked not only one of the best business jobs, but one of the best overall careers in the country,” notes the site, which based its findings on research from several sources, including College Navigator Grad Schools – Master’s in Accounting, U.S. News – Careers and Princeton Review – Business Schools.

In assessing the strengths of programs, the site looked at academic rigor as well as cost. To determine affordability, the net price of schools (tuition minus average financial aid package) was calculated, and schools with an average cost less than $22,000 were included.

From there, the site had more than 200 affordable, accredited Master of Accountancy programs on which to focus. The schools were all ranked on such factors as:

  • student-to-faculty ratio
  • average undergrad GPA
  • number of major-related student organizations
  • percentage of students employed by graduation

UA’s “flexible program,” ranked 23, was praised for its “close professor interaction, thanks to a student-to-faculty ratio of 6:1, as well as a stellar placement rate upon graduation of 96 percent.”

Among the other schools across the country to receive the “Top 30” ranking are Purdue, Vanderbilt, Auburn and Rutgers universities.

“The recognition is most gratifying and speaks to the strengths of our program and the success of our graduates,” notes Dr. Thomas Calderon, professor and chair of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy.
