can be completed online through a student’s ZIPLINE account (last day to drop is September 5, 2011).
does not show on a student’s UA transcript.

A Withdraw (WD)….

For all UA Students:

occurs after the 14th calendar day of the semester until the end of the SEVENTH week (49th calendar day) of the semester (last Day to Withdraw is Sunday, October 9, 2011 by midnight).
is not permitted after the seventh week (49th calendar day of the semester).
will appear on the student’s transcript as a “WD”.

For new UA students whose first term of enrolment is fall 2011…

Students may complete a WITHDRAWAL of a class only FOUR TIMES before they earn 64 credits (sophomore standing).Two withdraws are permitted as a freshman (0-32 credits) and two as a sophomore (33-64). WD’s are not cumulative over the two years.
Students may withdraw from the same course only TWICE. If a student attempts to withdraw from a course after having withdrawn from it twice before, he or she will continue to be enrolled in the course and will receive a grade at the end of the semester.
It is the responsibility of the student to determine the impact of withdrawing from courses on matters such as financial aid (including scholarships and grants), eligibility for on campus employment and housing, athletic participation, and insurance eligibility.
Undergraduate students who withdraw from two courses either before they have earned 32 credits, or after they have earned 32 credits but before they have earned 64 credits, are not permitted to register for additional courses (a hold will be placed on the student’s enrollment) until they have consulted with their academic adviser. The purpose of the consultation will be to discuss the reasons for the course withdrawals and to promote satisfactory academic progress by helping students develop strategies to complete their courses successfully.

Chelsea Kunkel's Greece/Italy Study Abroad Experience

On another scorching day in Athens, Greece, a rugged classroom awaited the arrival of two groups of students and their professors. The first crowd was one who sauntered through the University of Piraeus hallways daily, made up of the Greek students themselves. The second was a collection of students from The University of Akron, spending a month of their summer studying abroad in Italy and Greece. The two professors joined the class and an immersion of cultural viewpoints emerged, leaving each student with vivid new perspectives.

As the UA students travelled, a theme began to surface. Every new encounter was unique; it was never right or wrong, but only special to the culture that the students lived and breathed in. The month long journey to the countries of Greece and Italy held an amalgam of new cultural understandings for the seventeen students and their professor.

The journey included travelling throughout southern Italy, across the Aegean Sea, into Greece, and finishing with the Greek Islands. Among many other experiences, the students tossed coins into the elegant Trevi Fountain in Rome, hiked to the top of Aphrodite’s temple, looked into the eyes of a Pompeii skeleton, shouted hopa while Greek dancing in Athens, dove from the cliffs of Hydra Island, and swam in the hot springs of a Greek Island volcano.

Dean's Faculty Recognition Awards were given on May 1, 2010. The Award for Excellence in Teaching was given to Dr. William McHenry, Associate Professor of Management; the Excellence in Research to Dr. Il-Woon Kim, Professor of Accounting; and the Excellence in Service to Mr. Thomas Costigan, Instructor of Finance. The Awards were initiated in 2008 to recognize consistent faculty excellence in teaching, research, and service. The winners were chosen by a committee of their peers. CBA Team Competes at HR Regional Competition

Cynthia Mako-Robinison, Director of CBA Undergraduate Programs, was recently selected to receive an Administrators’ Institute Scholarship. The Institute is sponsored by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Mako-Robinson was one of six individuals honored with this scholarship award in the competition this year.

Mako-Robinison attended the Administrators’ Institute in Clearwater, Florida, February 14-16, 2010 for an intensive program designed to benefit advising administrators of all levels at institutions of higher education.

The Institute, attended by professionals from across the globe, utilized learning community groups facilitated by Institute faculty who are experienced advising administrators and leaders in the field. The faculty and groups assisted in the development of the participants’ actions plans which focused on a key issue or concern on campus that the administrator wanted to address for improvement or change. The goal was to assist both new and experienced administrators make significant changes and improvements at their institutions.

The Institute also provided administrators with tools to assist them in responding to the latest issues appearing on campuses and within academic advising programs. Another objective of the Administrators’ Institute was to help advising professionals develop a clearer sense of academic advising programs, how to effectively administer them, and how programs should fit within the institution.

NACADA is made up of faculty, professional advisors, administrators, counselors, and others in academic and student affairs concerned with the intellectual, personal, and vocational needs of students. The goal of NACADA is to promote quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to enhance the educational development of students. In addition, NACADA is the representative and advocate of academic advising and those providing that service to higher education.

Mako-Robinison will be honored and presented with the award during the NACADA Annual Conference this fall at the Coronado Springs Resort in Walt Disney World, Florida.

The prospect of coming up with a new business idea is one thing, but advancing that idea from concept to completion is another story. Fortunately, help is available for those individuals with a great idea but unsure of its viability and/or how to proceed. It’s called the Entrepreneur’s Idea Exchange.

“The purpose of this organization is to help people with ideas at any stage of development to move forward by providing a venue to not only propose their concepts, but also solicit fair – and honest – feedback from peers and seasoned entrepreneurs,” explained Corrine Beller, organizer of the Entrepreneur’s Idea Exchange and Director of Outreach for The University of Akron College of Business Administration. “What better platform to test the viability of people’s ideas and take them to the next level while helping to create jobs and economic development for our area?”

To promote and facilitate the events, an organizing committee was formed to include organizations that touch people in the area who could be the next entrepreneur. In addition to The University of Akron College of Business Administration, members of the committee include the Austen Bioinnovation Institute, Greater Akron Chamber, Akron Innovation Center, Akron Incubator, Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), Akron Urban League, Score, Akron Athena Powerlink®, Summa Foundation, Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board, Leadership Akron, Kent Regional Business Alliance, Medina County Economic Development Corp., Women’s Network and The University of Akron’s MCUC, Midpoint and Wayne College campuses.

The Idea Exchange is modeled after the Founder’s Café, in existence in Cleveland since 2008. From its inception, more than five hundred people have attended the Founder’s Café, and many more ideas have been presented, discussed, improved and realized. The Entrepreneur’s Idea Exchange is for people from Summit, the surrounding counties and beyond. It will help entrepreneurs develop new business ideas and fill a great need for all.

The inaugural meeting for the Entrepreneur’s Idea Exchange will be held on Tuesday, March 16, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the University of Akron, College of Business Administration concourse – 259 S. Pi Sigma Epsilon, the professional sales and marketing fraternity of The University of Akron, has joined with the Rotary Club of Akron in a project to raise awareness and funds for ShelterBox. A tent was set up and contents of the box were on display in the atrium of the College of Business Administration on Tuesday, February 23 and Friday, February 26 from 9:00-5:00. There is a newly established, full, all expenses paid, scholarship program for students to learn about Korean culture firsthand. The South Korea University Spring Break program will take place March 13 - March 22, 2010. This program is the perfect opportunity for students who do not have time to spend a full semester or academic year abroad, but are looking for a short term opportunity to explore Korean culture!
