ISACA Group Information in The University of Akron:

The ISACA Student Group at the University of Akron was officially formed and recognized in August 2005 by the ISACA International. The goal of the Student Group is, through student empowerment, to educate and make students aware of the emerging trends in the IS/IT Audit and Assurance, Security and IS/IT governance, standards, practices and certification with a focus on accounting and information systems. Specific the Student Group seeks:

  • To promote the education of and help expand the knowledge and skills of student members in the interrelated fields of IT governance, IS audit, security, control and assurance;
  • To encourage a free exchange of IT governance, IS audit, security, control and assurance techniques, approaches, and problem solving by students in association with professionals;
  • To promote adequate communication to keep students abreast of current events in IT governance, IS audit, security, control and assurance that can be beneficial to their careers and their employers;
  • To communicate to budding accounting and systems professionals the importance of establishing controls necessary to ensure proper IT governance and the effective organization and utilization of IT resources; and
  • To educate and make students aware of the professional certifications and IT governance.

Some highlights of The ISACA Student Group at the University of Akron

  • We were the first official Student Group in the world.
  • We are still the only Student ISACA group in NE Ohio.
    • Big advantage for University of Akron.
    • Strong & close relationship with the Cleveland based NE Ohio Chapter.
    • Our meetings are held twice a month.
    • We invite speaker from the industry and profession.
      • We bring speakers from diverse organizations.
    • The speaker talks for approximately 45 minutes, followed with open time where students can casually interact with the professionals.
  • Goal of the student group meetings is to:
    • Get students participate into our group activities, interact with professionals.
    • Encourage new students join our group and
    • Take a proactive in The University of Akron and the surrounding community.
      • Previous semesters the student group attended:
        • Hope for Haiti (an event made by student) March 11th @ 8pm to raise funds for the Doctors Without Borders that are working in Haiti.
    • Relay for Life
  • The Group plans to be a part of giving back to the community
    • Part of our new focus along with learning from professionals for our future growth.
  • Themes and highlights of the meetings this semester:
    • Ice Cream Social to increase awareness among students.
    • NEO ISACA Chapter – Opportunities for Student involvement and interaction.
    • IS Audit and IT Governance.
    • Exciting career opportunities awaiting students in the accounting and AIS field.
    • Issues surrounding Hacking and Prevention.
    • FISMA & Risk Management Framework.
    • CAATs and other BEASTs.
