Career Expo Tips

The Center for Career Management recognizes the tremendous value Career Expos offer to UA students, alumni and participating employers. To help ensure a successful event for everyone involved, the CCM offers programs to students and alumni to assist them with overall preparation advice and helpful networking techniques. However, despite our efforts to coach students to assertively approach employers in an informed and inquisitive manner, unfortunately student anxiety levels naturally tend to rise in this type of environment and good intentions often take a back seat to fear and uncertainness.

Listed below are some helpful tips to ensure a welcoming and positive interaction between the organization representative and potential candidates ranging from seasoned alumni and recent graduates to eager sophomores and juniors looking to get a jump-start on the job market:

Preparation:

  • What are your primary goals – Recruiting student for available full time or internship positions? Generating prospects for future openings? Sharing general career information? Introducing a new product or service? Enhancing organizational image and/or name recognition?
  • What are your overall organizational needs? Are you able to refer prospective candidates with various majors and backgrounds to respective people in your organization?
  • What types of additional resources will you need for a successful visit – Displays? Electricity? Handouts? Company literature? Free give aways?

Making the Most of Your Expo Experience:

  • Please be sure to allow for adequate time for set-up prior to the start of the Expo and tear down after the Expo officially ends.
  • If your schedule allows for it, we strongly encourage all employers to staff their Expo tables until the final minutes of the events. Students and alumni often have to juggle class schedules and other priorities to attend the Expo – it shouldn’t be assumed students who attend later in the day are less motivated than those who attend earlier in the day.
  • Plan on attending the luncheon sponsored by the CCM – it’s an excellent opportunity to network with other employers, CCM staff members, and UA faculty and administrators.
  • If at all possible, try to stand in front of or beside your table and/or exhibit. This positioning tends to create a more welcoming environment for students/alumni to approach you.
  • Be sure to bring plenty of business cards or other information (i.e. web site and/or email addresses) for student follow-up.
  • Do you have an on-campus recruiting date scheduled with the CCM following the Career Expo? Provided you have available interview slots, you can invite prospective candidates from the Expo to interview with you during your on-campus interview date. Please be sure to alert CCM staff of your recent invitations.
  • Please don’t hesitate to bring any issues and/or concerns to the attention of CCM staff members during the event – we will make every effort to accommodate your needs. In addition, we would greatly appreciate any feedback you can provide by completing and returning the Employer Evaluation Form (link??) prior to the end of the event. We rely on your recommendations to improve future Expos.

Happy Networking!
