Co-op Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to take a position I do not really want?
No. But when you reject a viable co-op/internship opportunity you run the risk of not having a position that semester. Students are urged to be flexible when considering job options.

Am I guaranteed a job?
No. Although every effort is made to find co-op/internship positions for interested students not everyone is hired. Your resumes can be referred out, but it is the employers who make the decisions.

Will my co-op/internship salary pay for all my college expenses?
Many students are able to pay a substantial part of their education from co-op/internship earnings.

Are my wages subject to withholding taxes?
Yes. Co-op/Internship wages are subject to federal and, where applicable, state and/or local taxation.

Who determines my salary?
The employer. Most salaries are 60-70% of an entry-level salary for that position.

Will my financial aid, Social Security income or Veteran’s benefits be affected by Co-op/internships?
Probably. These are issues you must discuss with the Associate Director of Co-op/Internships and the appropriate department to determine the specifics regarding your situation.

Is what I do with my co-op/internship job my own business?
No. While on an assignment you are still classified as a full-time student at The University of Akron. Your work performance is a reflection on you, the Center for Career Management and the University. You are expected to perform to the best of your ability and follow all employment policies and practices. You may not initiate any changes related to your job assignment without the prior approval of a co-op/internship staff member.

How will co-op/internship affect my graduation date?
That depends upon your major. In some parallel plans co-op/internships may change your anticipated graduation date. In some alternating positions, your delay may be two semesters. In some cases it may not change your anticipated graduation date at all.

If I have a local assignment may I still participate in UA activities?
Yes. Co-op/internship students are eligible to participate in all campus activities while on an assignment. These activities, however, should not interfere with your assignment.

If I co-op/intern in the Akron area, may I continue to live in the UA residence halls?
Yes.

If I work outside the Akron area will I lose my student status?
No. If you are registered for co-op/internship you maintain your full time student status at The University of Akron regardless of where your job is located.

For out-of-town assignments, is the employer responsible for transportation and housing expenses?
No. When students accept out-of-town assignments they must usually assume responsibility for living expenses. Some employers may cover all or part of transportation costs, but this cannot be expected in all cases.

If I’m on an alternating co-op/internship assignment outside of Northeast Ohio, how will I register for classes to be taken the next semester?
Telephone and web registration is available to all students. All schedule of classes can be found on the web.

While on an assignment in another city, may I take classes at another university?
Yes, that is a possibility, if you obtain written permission from your academic advisor prior to leaving The University of Akron and enrolling at the other university.
